Defence Cooperation – India’s growing role in regional security and defence cooperation has received fresh recognition from the United States, with senior American officials highlighting New Delhi’s expanding military capabilities and strategic importance in the Indo-Pacific region.
Speaking during the second day of the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth described India as an essential force for maintaining stability across South Asia and the broader Indo-Pacific. He said a strong and capable India contributes significantly to preserving a balanced security environment in the region while advancing mutual interests shared by both nations.
India’s Expanding Security Responsibilities
Hegseth noted that India has steadily strengthened its defence capabilities in recent years and is assuming a larger role in safeguarding maritime and regional interests. According to his remarks, India’s military modernisation efforts are helping the country take on greater responsibility for security, particularly across the strategically important Indian Ocean region.
He stated that New Delhi’s investments in defence preparedness reflect its commitment to enhancing operational readiness while supporting regional stability. The growing capabilities of the Indian armed forces, he said, are becoming increasingly important in addressing evolving security challenges.
Growth of Defence Manufacturing Capacity
The US defense chief also highlighted India’s progress in building a stronger domestic defence industrial base. He pointed out that the country is expanding its manufacturing, logistics and maintenance infrastructure to support sophisticated military operations.
According to Hegseth, these developments improve India’s ability to maintain advanced defence systems and provide support for shared military platforms. He also noted that such capabilities could assist naval operations conducted by US forces in the region, further strengthening practical cooperation between the two countries.
Focus on Joint Production Initiatives
Another major area of discussion was the growing collaboration between Washington and New Delhi in defence production. Hegseth referred to ongoing efforts aimed at jointly developing and manufacturing military equipment, including advanced anti-tank weapon systems.
He said these initiatives represent concrete steps toward improving operational coordination and strengthening the readiness of both countries’ armed forces. The emphasis on co-production reflects a broader effort to deepen long-term defence ties while expanding technological cooperation.
Industrial Strength Seen as Immediate Priority
During his address, Hegseth stressed that industrial capacity has become a critical factor in modern defence planning. He explained that the ability to manufacture, maintain and sustain military systems is no longer only a long-term objective but an immediate operational requirement for nations seeking to strengthen security preparedness.
He linked India’s expanding industrial capabilities with wider efforts by the United States and its partners to improve readiness and resilience across the Indo-Pacific region.
United States Plans Major Defence Investments
The US official also outlined Washington’s plans to further increase defence spending and accelerate military production. He said the United States is undertaking a significant expansion of its defence manufacturing capabilities to ensure faster and larger-scale production of advanced military equipment.
Referring to President Donald Trump’s defence priorities, Hegseth stated that the administration intends to make substantial investments in military preparedness and industrial expansion. He described the initiative as part of a long-term strategy aimed at strengthening America’s defence capabilities for the future.
Call for Greater Commitment From Allies
Hegseth urged allied nations and strategic partners to increase their own defence commitments. He said countries that share security responsibilities should demonstrate stronger investment in defence preparedness and collective security efforts.
He added that nations willing to take on greater responsibilities and actively contribute to regional stability would benefit from deeper cooperation with the United States. According to him, Washington intends to place greater emphasis on partnerships with countries that possess strong capabilities and a clear commitment to protecting their national interests.
