Defections – Maharashtra Political Row Deepens Amid ‘Operation Tiger’ Claims
Defections – Political developments in Maharashtra have sparked fresh debate after senior Congress leader Nana Patole strongly criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Union government over reports linked to the so-called “Operation Tiger” discussions in the state.

Governance and Democratic Concerns
Speaking to the media, Patole questioned the motives behind the alleged political exercise and accused the ruling establishment of attempting to expand its influence by encouraging elected representatives from opposition parties to shift loyalties. He argued that voters elect candidates under a party banner and that efforts to attract lawmakers from rival camps undermine the spirit of democratic politics.
Patole also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that the pursuit of political power had crossed acceptable democratic boundaries. According to him, the current political environment reflects an excessive concentration of authority that weakens institutional independence.
Criticism of Constitutional Institutions
The Congress leader further raised concerns about the functioning of constitutional offices, particularly the role of the Assembly Speaker. He alleged that the independence traditionally associated with such positions was being eroded and claimed that important decisions were increasingly influenced by the central leadership of the ruling alliance.
Patole maintained that democratic institutions must operate autonomously and warned that any perception of political interference could damage public confidence in the constitutional framework.
Allegations Against the Ruling Alliance
Continuing his attack, Patole accused the ruling coalition of engaging in actions that, in his view, weaken democratic values. He alleged that the alliance was attempting to reshape the political landscape through methods aimed at securing greater control rather than respecting electoral mandates.
The BJP and its allies have repeatedly rejected similar accusations in the past, maintaining that political realignments occur due to ideological differences and individual decisions taken by elected representatives.
Speculation Over Shiv Sena (UBT) MPs
The controversy comes at a time when Maharashtra politics is witnessing intense speculation surrounding the future of Shiv Sena (UBT). Reports have suggested that several Members of Parliament from the party could be in contact with the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena faction. However, Shiv Sena (UBT) leaders have firmly denied the claims and dismissed reports of any impending split.
The discussion has revived memories of the dramatic 2022 political upheaval, when Eknath Shinde and a group of legislators broke away from Uddhav Thackeray’s leadership, resulting in a major division within the Shiv Sena.
Sanjay Raut and Mahua Moitra Exchange Remarks
Adding to the political heat, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut made sarcastic comments regarding alleged attempts to encourage defections. Responding to remarks on social media by Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, Raut joked about the supposed monetary value attached to lawmakers, suggesting that figures being discussed publicly were only advance amounts.
Moitra had earlier posted a sarcastic response concerning alleged financial inducements offered to legislators and Members of Parliament. The exchange quickly attracted attention online and added another layer to the ongoing political debate.
As speculation continues, the issue has become a focal point in Maharashtra politics, with opposition leaders questioning the intentions behind reported outreach efforts while the concerned parties continue to deny any plans of defection.
