As the nomination process concluded, the Congress projected strong confidence, while the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) officially entered the contest with its chosen candidate.
Congress Projects Strong Electoral Performance
On the final day for filing nominations, Madhya Pradesh Congress President Jitu Patwari said the Datia by-election could influence the state’s future political direction. Addressing party supporters, he thanked voters for what he described as an encouraging public response and expressed confidence that the Congress would secure a decisive mandate.
Patwari claimed the level of support witnessed during the campaign reflected growing expectations for political change. According to him, the atmosphere in the constituency suggests that Congress is well positioned to register a comfortable victory. He went on to predict that the party would win the seat with a margin of around 25,000 votes.
Senior Leaders Attend Nomination Filing
Congress candidate Ghanshyam Singh submitted his nomination papers in the presence of several senior party leaders. Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Digvijaya Singh and Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar were among those who attended the nomination event, demonstrating the party’s focus on the by-election.
The Congress leadership has presented the Datia contest as a significant opportunity to strengthen its political position in the state, with senior leaders actively participating in campaign activities.
Candidate Cites Discontent Within BJP
Before filing his nomination, Ghanshyam Singh alleged that dissatisfaction among BJP workers could influence the election outcome. He argued that the replacement of former state Home Minister Narottam Mishra as the BJP candidate had altered the political equation in the constituency.
Singh maintained that differences within the ruling party had become increasingly visible and suggested that internal discontent could affect campaign efforts. He also claimed that some BJP supporters were unhappy with recent developments, although these remarks remain part of the political exchanges between rival parties during the election campaign.
Datia’s Political History Adds Significance
Ghanshyam Singh has represented the Datia Assembly constituency in the past, winning elections in 1993 and again in 2003. While acknowledging that today’s political environment differs considerably from earlier decades, he said the demand for change among voters continues to shape his campaign.
The Datia constituency is regarded as politically significant, and the by-election is expected to attract close attention from political observers because of its potential impact on future electoral strategies in Madhya Pradesh.
Why the By-Election Is Being Held
The bypoll became necessary after the Assembly seat was declared vacant following the disqualification of Rajendra Bharti on April 2. The disqualification was carried out under the provisions of Section 8 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, along with Article 191(1)(e) of the Constitution of India.
The Election Commission of India has scheduled polling for July 30, while the counting of votes will take place on August 3. The result is expected to provide an important political indicator for both the Congress and the BJP ahead of future electoral contests in the state.
BJP Names Its Candidate
The BJP has nominated Ashutosh Tiwari as its candidate for the Datia Assembly by-election. The party opted for a new face instead of former Home Minister Narottam Mishra, who was defeated from the constituency in the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections.
