Culture – Centre Backs Andhra Pradesh Push to Expand Key Cultural Institutions
Culture – The Union Government has indicated positive support for a series of proposals submitted by the Andhra Pradesh government to strengthen the state’s cultural and artistic ecosystem. Andhra Pradesh Tourism, Culture and Cinematography Minister Kandula Durgesh said on Friday that the Centre had assured priority consideration for five major initiatives designed to expand cultural institutions and improve infrastructure across different regions of the state.
Five major cultural projects submitted to the Centre
During his visit to New Delhi, the Minister met Union Culture Secretary Vivek Aggarwal and presented a set of proposals covering theatre, literature, visual arts, music and cultural exchange. The initiatives include establishing a regional centre of the National School of Drama in Rajamahendravaram, setting up an Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) centre in Andhra Pradesh, creating a regional office of the Lalit Kala Akademi, constructing a modern Kalakshetra Auditorium at GVR Government College of Music and Dance in Vizianagaram, and opening a regional centre of the Sahitya Akademi in Kadapa.
According to Durgesh, these institutions would provide greater opportunities for artists, performers, students and cultural organisations while helping preserve and promote the state’s diverse artistic traditions.
Assurance of priority processing
The Minister said the Union Culture Secretary responded positively to the proposals and assured that they would receive priority attention. He added that the Centre is expected to complete the initial processing and issue an official communication within the next month.
The assurance, according to the Minister, reflects the Centre’s willingness to support projects that aim to improve cultural infrastructure and encourage wider participation in the arts. If approved, the proposed centres would enhance access to nationally recognised institutions and expand opportunities for cultural education and collaboration within Andhra Pradesh.
Government highlights commitment to heritage
Durgesh said the coalition government is focused on preserving the state’s rich cultural legacy while creating modern facilities for future generations. He described the Centre’s response as encouraging and expressed confidence that the proposed institutions would contribute to the development of artists and cultural professionals across Andhra Pradesh.
He noted that strengthening cultural infrastructure is an important part of the government’s broader vision for protecting heritage while promoting creative talent through better facilities and institutional support.
Tourism investment opportunities presented in New Delhi
Earlier in the day, the Minister also participated in the second day of the Faith Tourism Conclave 2026 held in New Delhi. The event brought together policymakers, investors and delegates from India and abroad to discuss opportunities in the tourism sector.
Representing Andhra Pradesh, Durgesh highlighted the state’s tourism potential and outlined investment opportunities available across various destinations. He was joined by Special Chief Secretary Ajay Jain, and together they delivered a presentation showcasing projects aimed at attracting investment and expanding tourism infrastructure.
The Minister also visited the Andhra Pradesh Tourism pavilion, where the state promoted its cultural heritage, religious destinations and tourism initiatives before national and international participants attending the conclave.
The government’s participation in the event forms part of its efforts to increase investment, strengthen tourism infrastructure and position Andhra Pradesh as a major destination for both domestic and international visitors while supporting cultural development alongside economic growth.
