Crime – Surat Woman Dies After Alleged Poisoning Attempt on Daughters
Crime – A deeply distressing incident in Gujarat’s Surat has drawn attention to the severe impact of prolonged domestic disputes.

A 35-year-old woman in Surat lost her life after allegedly consuming poison, following an attempt to give the same substance to her two young daughters amid ongoing family tensions. The incident occurred on Wednesday and has since prompted a detailed police inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the case.
Incident Unfolds Inside Family Home
According to initial reports, the woman, identified as Mital, was married to Jaysukh Patelia, who works at a diamond unit and originally hails from Bhavnagar. On the day of the incident, Patelia had followed his usual routine—leaving for work in the morning and briefly returning home for lunch before heading out again.
During his absence, Mital is believed to have mixed a pesticide commonly used to protect stored grains into drinking water. She then reportedly gave the mixture to her daughters, aged five and six. Shortly afterward, she consumed the same substance herself.
Phone Call Raises Alarm
After ingesting the poison, Mital reportedly contacted her husband and informed him of her actions. Her words indicated distress and a lack of will to continue living. Alarmed by the call, Patelia immediately reached out to his cousin, Harish, and both rushed back to the house.
Upon arriving, they encountered a troubling scene. The two children were found sitting on a bed, visibly distressed and crying, while their mother lay unconscious nearby. One of the daughters later told family members that their mother had given them what she described as “medicine” before consuming it herself.
Emergency Response and Medical Condition
The family quickly arranged for medical assistance, and all three were taken to SMIMER Hospital for urgent treatment. Doctors attended to them immediately, placing the children in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Despite medical efforts, Mital passed away on Thursday while undergoing treatment. Hospital authorities later confirmed that the condition of both children had stabilized and they were out of immediate danger.
Ongoing Domestic Strain
Preliminary findings from the investigation suggest that the couple had been experiencing frequent disagreements at home. These disputes were reportedly centered around routine household matters such as cooking, food, and daily responsibilities. Over time, these recurring arguments appear to have created emotional strain within the family.
Sources indicate that Mital had recently been planning a visit to her native village, reportedly for shopping related to a family wedding. Investigators are examining whether any additional stressors or personal concerns may have contributed to her actions.
Police Investigation Underway
The Singanpore police have initiated a comprehensive investigation to establish the exact sequence of events. Authorities are speaking with family members, neighbors, and others who may provide insights into the family’s situation in the days leading up to the incident.
Officials have stated that they are also exploring whether external pressures or underlying issues played a role, beyond the reported domestic disagreements. Forensic analysis and statements from witnesses are expected to help clarify the circumstances further.
Focus on Mental Health and Family Support
While the investigation continues, the incident has raised broader concerns about the effects of unresolved domestic conflict and emotional distress within households. Experts often emphasize the importance of communication, support systems, and timely intervention in preventing such tragedies.
Authorities have not yet concluded whether the act was premeditated or impulsive, and further updates are expected as the inquiry progresses.
