Crime – Political uproar intensifies after alleged assault on student in Ranchi
Crime – A serious allegation of sexual assault involving a postgraduate dental student in Ranchi has triggered strong political reactions across Jharkhand, with opposition leaders demanding swift legal action and accountability from the administration.

Protest Erupts Outside SSP Office
On Monday, a large number of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and supporters gathered outside the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) office in Ranchi. The demonstration saw participants raising slogans against the police and state authorities, pressing for immediate justice in the case. Protesters emphasized the need for a fast-track trial and strict punishment for those accused.
Party representatives indicated that their agitation could escalate if authorities fail to ensure timely legal proceedings. The protest followed a torch march organized by BJP women members a day earlier, reflecting growing public concern over the incident.
Allegations Against State Administration
The opposition party has criticized the state government, alleging a lack of sensitivity in handling crimes against women. Leaders argued that such incidents highlight systemic gaps in safety and enforcement, calling for stronger measures to protect women and ensure justice.
In response to the protest, heavy police presence was deployed around the SSP office to maintain order. Officials confirmed that demonstrators were restricted from entering the premises to prevent any escalation.
Police Outline Case Details
According to police officials, the alleged incident took place on April 9 at an apartment complex in the Lalpur area of Ranchi. The student was reportedly invited to a birthday gathering by an acquaintance. During the event, she is believed to have consumed food items that were allegedly laced with intoxicating substances.
Authorities stated that the victim’s condition worsened the following morning, leading to her hospitalization due to excessive bleeding. The seriousness of her medical condition brought the matter to the attention of law enforcement.
Arrests and Investigation Progress
The Ranchi Police constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. With assistance from technical experts, the team tracked down the main suspect, identified as Mohammad Danish, along with an associate, Fahad Mallik, in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Both individuals were taken into custody.
Earlier, another person described as a close acquaintance of the victim and allegedly linked to the incident had been arrested in Ranchi. Investigators believe this individual may have played a role in facilitating the gathering where the incident occurred.
A fourth accused, Shadab, who had been evading arrest, surrendered before a local court on Saturday. He has since been taken into police custody for further questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.
Authorities Assure Legal Action
Police officials have maintained that prompt steps were taken following the complaint and that all accused individuals are now in custody. They stated that evidence has been collected and documented, and efforts are underway to ensure that the case proceeds efficiently through the judicial system.
Officials also reiterated their commitment to securing a conviction through due process, emphasizing that the investigation is being handled with seriousness and urgency.
Growing Demand for Faster Justice
The case has once again brought attention to the broader issue of crimes against women and the pace of justice delivery in such matters. Political leaders and civil society groups have called for reforms that ensure quicker trials and stronger deterrents.
As investigations continue, the incident remains a focal point in Jharkhand’s political discourse, with both administrative accountability and public safety under scrutiny.
