CounterfeitLiquor – Assam Excise Teams Uncover Large Illegal Liquor Network in Chirang
CounterfeitLiquor – A major enforcement operation carried out by the Assam Excise Department has exposed an extensive illegal liquor production and distribution network operating in Chirang district. The action followed specific intelligence inputs and involved a joint team from the Guwahati Excise Intelligence Bureau (EIB) along with excise officials from Bongaigaon and Chirang.

Hidden Stockpile Discovered During Raids
Officials said the operation continued for two days and led to the recovery of a significant quantity of materials allegedly being used for the manufacture and packaging of counterfeit liquor. During searches conducted at multiple locations, investigators uncovered concealed storage units and equipment linked to the illegal trade.
At a poultry farm in Sundari reportedly associated with a suspect identified as Surana Muchahary, excise personnel excavated several underground containers. These included six drums containing Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) and three drums filled with caramel, a substance commonly used in liquor production. Authorities also recovered thousands of branded packaging cartons believed to be intended for counterfeit products.
Manufacturing Equipment and Raw Materials Seized
In a separate raid conducted at a residence in Bhutiapara belonging to Dipak Debnath, officials seized a bottle-capping machine along with other materials allegedly used in the bottling process. According to the department, one individual identified as Lankeswar Debnath was taken into custody during the operation. However, the main suspect remains absconding, and efforts are underway to locate him.
The investigation expanded after fresh intelligence suggested additional illegal activities in the area. Acting on this information, enforcement teams searched a heavily concealed five-bigha plot allegedly owned by Sanjiv Debnath. During the search, authorities recovered 126 gunny bags filled with empty liquor bottles that were reportedly prepared for use in illegal bottling operations.
Excise Commissioner Warns Illegal Operators
Reacting to the findings, Assam Excise Commissioner Jitu Doley stated that the department is intensifying its efforts against counterfeit liquor networks operating across the state. He emphasized that enforcement agencies would continue pursuing those involved in illegal manufacturing and distribution activities.
According to Doley, individuals attempting to hide contraband or operate unlawful facilities should expect strict action from authorities. He also confirmed that teams are actively tracking those who have evaded arrest and that legal proceedings will be pursued against all offenders.
Statewide Vigilance to Be Strengthened
Senior Excise Officer Sailendra Pandey said the large-scale seizure demonstrates the department’s commitment to tackling organized groups involved in illegal liquor operations. He noted that such activities not only affect government revenue but can also pose serious risks to public health and consumer safety.
Pandey further stated that authorities are focusing on every link in the supply chain, including suppliers, manufacturers, transporters, and distributors. He warned that those found connected to the network would face strict legal consequences under applicable laws.
Crackdown Expected to Continue
The Assam Excise Department has indicated that surveillance and enforcement measures will be further strengthened across the state. Officials said recent operations send a clear message that efforts to curb illegal liquor production and protect state revenue will continue with greater intensity in the coming months.
