CongressLeadership – Kerala Chief Minister Decision Expected After Intense Internal Consultations
CongressLeadership – The Congress party is preparing to announce its choice for Kerala’s next chief minister on Thursday, bringing an end to more than a week of uncertainty and internal negotiations. The formal declaration is expected during the Congress Legislature Party meeting scheduled at the KPCC headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram at 1 pm.

Senior leaders from the party’s central leadership, including AICC Kerala in-charge Deepa Das Munshi and observers Ajay Maken and Mukul Wasnik, are expected to attend the crucial meeting. The announcement follows several rounds of deliberations involving top Congress figures and newly elected legislators.
Leadership Race Triggered Intense Discussions
The delay in naming the chief ministerial candidate came after a closely watched contest among senior Congress leaders VD Satheesan, Ramesh Chennithala and KC Venugopal. Over the past nine days, the party leadership held extensive consultations to arrive at a consensus that could balance organisational interests and political realities in Kerala.
Expectations of an immediate announcement rose sharply after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met party president Mallikarjun Kharge at his residence on Wednesday. The meeting reportedly lasted over 40 minutes and was viewed as a decisive step toward resolving the leadership question.
However, following the discussion, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh clarified that the final decision would be made public only on Thursday. He stated that the party leadership had completed its consultations after receiving authorisation from members of the Congress Legislature Party in Kerala.
Multiple Rounds of Consultations Held
According to party sources, the Congress leadership conducted discussions with MLAs, MPs, former Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee presidents and senior organisational leaders before reaching its final position. Rahul Gandhi also reportedly held one-on-one meetings with several leaders to understand the views emerging from different factions within the party.
The leadership battle drew significant attention because of the competing support bases enjoyed by the leading contenders. KC Venugopal, considered close to Rahul Gandhi, was believed to have the backing of a substantial section of Congress legislators and parliamentarians. Reports indicated that a majority of Congress MLAs supported his candidature.
At the same time, VD Satheesan received strong support from influential United Democratic Front allies, particularly the Indian Union Muslim League. Political observers noted that the backing of coalition partners became an important factor during the final phase of discussions.
Public Sentiment Emerged as Key Factor
Sources within the party suggested that senior Congress veterans including AK Antony, VM Sudheeran and K Muraleedharan advised the leadership to consider broader public opinion while selecting the next chief minister. Their assessment reportedly favoured Satheesan, who was seen by many supporters as having stronger public acceptance at the state level.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the MP from Wayanad, is also believed to have conveyed the importance of considering the prevailing political mood before making the final announcement. Rahul Gandhi reportedly continued discussions with party MPs through phone conversations to gather additional feedback on the issue.
The stand taken by the Muslim League added another layer of complexity to the decision-making process. The ally openly expressed support for Satheesan, placing the Congress leadership in a sensitive position. Party strategists were reportedly concerned about maintaining coalition unity ahead of future bypolls and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.
Electoral Calculations Influenced Final Deliberations
Another issue discussed during consultations involved the electoral implications of selecting Venugopal. Leaders supporting Satheesan argued that choosing Venugopal could trigger two by-elections — one for a Kerala Assembly seat and another for the Alappuzha Lok Sabha constituency currently represented by him.
Some within the party reportedly viewed this possibility as politically risky at a time when the Congress is trying to consolidate its recent electoral gains in Kerala.
The prolonged delay in naming the chief minister came despite the Congress-led alliance securing a major victory in the Assembly elections with 102 seats. While the result strengthened the party politically, the leadership debate also exposed internal divisions and competing power centres within both the Congress and its alliance structure.
