CongressLeader – The Congress party is mourning the loss of senior leader Suraj Hegde, who passed away late Sunday night after suffering a cardiac arrest. He was around 55 years old and was undergoing treatment at a private hospital when he breathed his last, according to information shared by party sources.

Suraj Hegde held several important responsibilities within the Congress organisation over the years. At the time of his death, he was serving as an AICC Secretary and as the Vice-Chairman of the Karnataka Government’s Guarantee Committee. He was also known for his earlier role as the national in-charge of the Indian Youth Congress. Hegde came from a prominent political family and was the grandson of former Karnataka Chief Minister Devaraj Urs.
Leaders Express Deep Grief
Congress leaders from across the country paid tribute to Hegde, remembering his contribution to the party and public life. Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar described the news as deeply shocking and said Hegde was among the most dedicated leaders within the organisation.
According to Shivakumar, Hegde played a crucial role in strengthening the party structure through his administrative skills and close engagement with grassroots workers. He noted that the Congress had lost a leader who maintained strong relationships with party members at every level.
Rahul Gandhi Highlights Youth Mentorship
Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi also expressed sorrow over Hegde’s passing. He recalled Hegde’s commitment to the values and principles of the Congress party throughout his political journey.
Gandhi said Hegde viewed his responsibilities in the Indian Youth Congress as more than just an organisational assignment. He credited him with guiding and encouraging many young political workers who continue to contribute to public life and democratic values. Kharge Remembers Long Association
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said he was saddened by the unexpected demise of a leader he had known since his younger years. Kharge remembered Hegde as a sincere and hardworking party worker who gradually grew into a respected organisational leader.
Reflecting on Hegde’s political journey, Kharge said he had made notable contributions to the Youth Congress and remained committed to the ideals associated with former Chief Minister Devaraj Urs. He praised Hegde’s dedication and loyalty to the party throughout his career.

Karnataka Congress president B K Hariprasad highlighted Hegde’s efforts toward the welfare of backward communities, Dalits, and other socially disadvantaged groups. Hariprasad further stated that Hegde remained devoted to public service and played an important role in helping implement the Karnataka government’s welfare guarantee schemes. He described the leader’s death as a major setback for both the state and the Congress organisation.
