Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra conveyed their greetings on Friday, underlining the enduring importance of Buddha’s teachings in today’s world. Both leaders emphasised that his philosophy continues to offer guidance for building a more harmonious and just society.

Leaders Reflect on Buddha’s Timeless Philosophy

Rahul Gandhi shared his thoughts through a message on social media, stating that the principles laid down by Gautam Buddha remain relevant for humanity. He noted that Buddha’s teachings encourage individuals to follow a path rooted in non-violence, truth, compassion, and moral responsibility. According to him, these values serve as a guiding force for promoting social harmony and peaceful coexistence.

He expressed hope that people would continue to draw inspiration from Buddha’s life and adopt his ideals in their daily lives, particularly in times that call for unity and understanding.

Emphasis on Love and Compassion

Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also extended her greetings, focusing on one of Buddha’s most widely known teachings—that hatred can only be overcome through love. She highlighted that this message remains as relevant today as it was centuries ago.

In her remarks, she pointed out that Buddha’s teachings encourage individuals to embrace truth, kindness, and compassion while working toward a society based on peace and mutual respect. She added that these values form the foundation for lasting harmony and collective progress.

Significance of Buddha Purnima

Buddha Purnima is observed to commemorate the birth of Gautam Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. The day, also referred to as Vesak in many parts of the world, holds special significance for followers of Buddhism and those who admire his teachings.

According to traditional beliefs, this occasion is considered particularly sacred because it marks not only Buddha’s birth but also the day he attained enlightenment and later achieved Mahaparinirvana. This rare alignment has led to the day being described as a “triple-blessed” event in Buddhist traditions.

Historical Background and Legacy

Gautam Buddha was born into a royal family as the son of King Suddhodhan and Queen Mayadevi. Despite his privileged upbringing, he chose to leave behind his royal life at the age of 29 in search of deeper spiritual understanding. His journey eventually led him to attain enlightenment, after which he dedicated his life to sharing his insights with others.

Over time, his teachings spread across regions and cultures, earning him recognition as a guiding spiritual figure. He is often referred to as the “Light of Asia” due to the profound impact of his philosophy on societies across the continent.

In 1999, the United Nations officially recognised Vesak as an international observance, acknowledging the global contribution of Buddhism to spiritual and cultural development.

Observances and Pilgrimage

Buddha Purnima is observed on a full moon day, typically falling between April and May. Devotees mark the occasion through prayers, meditation, and acts of kindness. Many also visit important pilgrimage sites associated with Buddha’s life.

One of the most significant locations is the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, where Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment. The site, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, attracts thousands of visitors each year during this period.

As celebrations continue across the country and beyond, the messages shared by leaders and spiritual traditions alike serve as a reminder of the enduring relevance of Buddha’s teachings in fostering peace, compassion, and unity
