Aviation – Halwara Airport Launch Opens New Growth Chapter for Ludhiana
Aviation – Ludhiana witnessed a significant step forward in regional infrastructure on Friday after the first commercial flight successfully arrived at the newly functional Halwara Airport, ending a decades-long wait for improved aviation access in the state’s industrial heartland.
The launch of airport operations is being viewed as an important development for Punjab’s economy, particularly for Ludhiana, which is widely recognised for its textile production, bicycle manufacturing, hosiery units, and engineering industries. Business groups and exporters in the region had repeatedly demanded a dedicated airport facility to support trade and improve faster movement of passengers and goods.
Leaders Call Airport Opening a Historic Achievement
Union Minister of State for Railways and Food Processing Industries Ravneet Singh Bittu described the beginning of operations at Halwara Airport as a landmark occasion for both Ludhiana and Punjab. In a message shared on social media, he said the project fulfilled a long-pending public demand that had remained unresolved for nearly 30 years.
Bittu travelled on the inaugural flight alongside Members of Parliament Vikramjit Sahney and Rajinder Gupta. He stated that the airport would strengthen industrial growth, improve business opportunities, and support export-oriented sectors in the region.
The minister also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for supporting infrastructure expansion in Punjab, saying the new airport would help create fresh economic opportunities for local businesses.
Better Air Connectivity Expected for Punjab Industry
Industry representatives believe the operational airport will make travel easier for entrepreneurs, investors, and exporters who previously depended on airports in neighbouring cities. Improved aviation services are also expected to benefit residents of nearby districts by reducing travel time and increasing transport options.
Economic experts have pointed out that improved connectivity often encourages investment, boosts tourism, and supports employment generation. With Ludhiana playing a major role in Punjab’s manufacturing sector, better transport infrastructure is expected to assist companies involved in domestic and international trade.
The airport project is also being seen as part of a broader effort to modernise transport facilities across the state. Officials expect the development to improve Punjab’s position as a commercial and industrial centre in northern India.
Railway Expansion Projects Continue Across Punjab
A day before the airport inauguration, Bittu also flagged off the new Amrit Bharat Express connecting Amritsar and New Jalpaiguri from Amritsar Junction railway station. The weekly train service has been introduced to improve long-distance rail connectivity between Punjab and several eastern and northern states.
According to the minister, the Amrit Bharat Express has been designed primarily for regular passengers seeking affordable long-distance travel. The non-air-conditioned train includes upgraded passenger facilities while maintaining economical ticket pricing.
Officials believe the new route will strengthen transport links between Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal. The service is also expected to contribute to tourism activity, trade movement, and regional economic development.
Major Investment Planned for Rail Infrastructure
Bittu said Punjab’s railway allocation for the 2026-27 financial year has increased to Rs 5,673 crore, while infrastructure projects worth more than Rs 26,000 crore are currently under implementation across the state.
Under the Centre’s Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, redevelopment work is ongoing at 30 railway stations in Punjab. Stations located in Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Mohali, Anandpur Sahib, and Muktsar are being upgraded with improved passenger facilities and modern infrastructure.
The minister further highlighted the ongoing redevelopment of Chandigarh Railway Station, which is being carried out by the Rail Land Development Authority at a cost exceeding Rs 450 crore. The project is considered one of the major railway modernisation initiatives currently underway in the region.
