AvianInfluenza – A sudden outbreak of avian influenza has led to the death of more than 4,400 chickens at a government-operated poultry farm in the Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh, triggering immediate containment measures by local authorities. Officials confirmed that the deaths occurred over a span of six days, from March 19 to March 24, raising concerns about the spread of the infection in nearby areas.
Infection Confirmed Through Laboratory Testing
According to senior officials from the Veterinary Department, samples collected from the deceased birds were sent for testing to laboratories in Bhopal and Pune. Results from the Bhopal facility confirmed the presence of avian influenza, prompting swift administrative action. The poultry farm, located in the Koni area, housed a total of 5,037 chickens, a majority of which were affected during the outbreak.
Containment Zones Declared Around Affected Area
Following confirmation of the disease, district authorities enforced strict containment protocols in line with the national action plan for avian influenza control. A one-kilometre area surrounding the poultry farm has been designated as an infected zone, while a wider radius of 10 kilometres has been placed under surveillance. These measures aim to prevent further transmission of the virus.
Culling and Movement Restrictions Implemented
As part of standard containment procedures, all poultry birds, eggs, and related materials within the infected zone will be destroyed to curb the spread of the virus. Authorities have also imposed a complete ban on the movement of poultry products in the affected area. Compensation will be provided to poultry owners for the loss of birds, as per government guidelines.
Rapid Response Teams have been deployed to oversee culling operations, ensure safe disposal of carcasses, and carry out sanitisation activities. The farm will be sealed once all necessary procedures are completed.
Monitoring and Public Safety Measures Strengthened
Officials have intensified surveillance across poultry markets and sale centres throughout the district. Warning signboards are being installed, and strict monitoring of transportation and trade activities related to poultry is underway. Multiple government departments, including revenue, police, and local administrative bodies, are coordinating efforts to ensure effective implementation of safety protocols.
Health Surveillance of Workers Initiated
Health authorities have begun monitoring individuals working at or associated with the affected poultry farm. Anyone displaying symptoms will undergo testing, and necessary medical treatment, including antiviral medication, will be provided if required. So far, no cases of human infection have been reported in connection with the outbreak.

The district administration has appealed to residents to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information.
