AhmedabadRain – AMC Intensifies Citywide Drainage Drive Following Heavy Monsoon Showers

AhmedabadRain –The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has continued extensive drainage operations across the city after persistent monsoon rainfall left several areas affected by waterlogging. Civic officials confirmed that emergency response teams remained active throughout Saturday, with personnel deployed across multiple locations to ensure faster removal of accumulated rainwater and minimize inconvenience for residents.

Drainage Teams Mobilised Across Affected Areas

According to the latest civic update issued at 6:00 a.m. on July 25, AMC stationed 24 teams at 20 different locations spread across 10 municipal wards. As part of the ongoing response, workers opened 141 catchpits and 85 manholes to improve the movement of stormwater through the city’s drainage network.

Officials said the operations covered the East, West, North-West and South-West zones, where waterlogging was reported after the heavy rainfall. The South Zone remained free from major water accumulation, though precautionary arrangements continued in the area.

East Zone Witnesses Maximum Waterlogging

Among all regions, the East Zone experienced the highest number of waterlogged locations, with six affected sites across four wards. AMC assigned a six-member team to the zone, where 59 catchpits and 25 manholes were opened to accelerate water discharge and restore normal traffic movement.

Although no waterlogging incidents were recorded in the South Zone, civic authorities kept three personnel on standby. As a preventive measure, 20 catchpits and 13 manholes remained open to ensure the drainage system could respond immediately if rainfall intensified.

Pumping Operations Continue in Several Areas

The West Zone reported water accumulation at five locations spread across three wards. A six-member response team managed drainage work by opening seven catchpits and two manholes.

AMC also confirmed that pumping operations at Chandlodia Lake had been partially scaled back after water levels declined, leading to the withdrawal of five pump sites. However, pumping equipment remained operational at other vulnerable locations across the city. Counter pumps were additionally deployed at certain private properties where rainwater had accumulated, helping speed up the restoration process.

North-West and South-West Zones Remain Under Watch

The North-West Zone recorded waterlogging at seven locations across two wards, making it another major focus area for civic teams. Seven personnel were assigned to the zone, where 46 catchpits and 36 manholes were opened to improve drainage efficiency.

Meanwhile, two locations in the South-West Zone experienced water accumulation. A two-member team handled the situation by opening nine catchpits along with nine manholes, allowing rainwater to drain more quickly.

Municipal officials stated that field teams continue to monitor conditions around the clock. They added that drainage infrastructure, pumping arrangements and rapid-response personnel remain fully operational to provide timely relief wherever required.

Seasonal Rainfall Figures Continue to Rise

Data released by the civic body showed Ahmedabad’s average seasonal rainfall has now reached 470.64 mm. The South-West Zone has received the highest average rainfall this season at 622.64 mm, followed by the North-West Zone with 583.43 mm. The Central and West zones have recorded 494.88 mm and 493.00 mm respectively, while the North Zone stands at 390.20 mm, the South Zone at 388.75 mm and the East Zone at 321.38 mm.

Among individual monitoring stations, Sarkhej Urban Health recorded the highest cumulative rainfall at 684.50 mm. Sarkhej followed with 677.00 mm, while Bopal registered 669.50 mm. Other locations reporting significant rainfall totals included Science City, Bodakdev, Thaltej, Jodhpur, Vasna, Ranip, Kalupur and the Municipal Corporation station.

Vasna Barrage Operating Under Free-Flow Conditions

AMC’s latest hydrological update stated that the city’s cumulative rainfall total has reached 3,294.27 mm, with an additional 5.15 mm recorded during the latest observation period.

The water level at the Vasna Barrage was measured at 37.576 feet. Officials reported a discharge of 12,325 cusecs through the barrage, while canal discharge stood at 2,588 cusecs. All 22 barrage gates remain open under free-flow conditions to facilitate the movement of excess water and support flood management efforts across the city.
