Extension Approved for Director General of Shipping

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has granted a two-year extension to Shyam Jagannathan, a senior IAS officer from the 1997 batch of the AGMUT cadre. With the latest approval, he will continue as Director General (Shipping) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways until June 1, 2028, or until further orders are issued.

An official notification stated that Jagannathan will remain in the rank and pay equivalent to an Additional Secretary to the Government of India during the extended period. The decision allows continuity in the leadership of the country’s maritime regulatory framework at a time when India’s shipping sector continues to expand.

Leadership Role in Maritime Regulation

As the head of the Directorate General of Shipping, Jagannathan oversees the nation’s primary maritime regulatory body, which operates under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The organisation, headquartered in Mumbai and established in 1949, is responsible for implementing maritime laws, regulations, and policy measures across the country.

The Directorate plays a crucial role in monitoring shipping operations, maintaining maritime safety standards, ensuring compliance with international conventions, supervising seafarer training and certification, and supporting environmental protection efforts in Indian waters.

During his tenure, Jagannathan has been associated with policy implementation, regulatory oversight, maritime safety compliance, and initiatives aimed at strengthening India’s shipping and logistics ecosystem.

Sanjay Jaju to Return to Telangana Cadre

In a separate order, the ACC approved the repatriation of Sanjay Jaju, a 1992-batch IAS officer belonging to the Telangana cadre. The decision was taken following a request submitted by the Telangana Government seeking his return from central deputation.

Jaju is presently serving as Secretary in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). With the approval now in place, he has been relieved from his assignment with the Central Government and is set to rejoin the Telangana administration.

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), in its notification, confirmed that the repatriation was cleared in response to the state’s request.

Expected Transition in Telangana Administration

According to official sources, Jaju is likely to take charge of his new assignment in Telangana on June 30. The development comes as Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao is scheduled to complete his extended term on the same date, potentially paving the way for a major administrative transition within the state government.

End of a Long Central Deputation

Jaju’s return concludes one of the lengthiest central deputation stints among officers from the Telangana cadre. Over nearly thirteen years in the Union Government, he held several senior positions across important ministries and departments.

Among his prominent assignments was his tenure in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, where he handled policy matters linked to media, broadcasting, and public communication. Most recently, he served as Secretary in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, overseeing initiatives connected with regional development and infrastructure growth in the northeastern states.

The latest decisions by the Centre reflect ongoing efforts to ensure administrative continuity in key sectors while facilitating cadre-based leadership transitions within state governments.
