Accident – Worker Dies After Falling Into Drain During Cleaning Operation
Accident – A 33-year-old sanitation worker lost his life on Monday after reportedly slipping into a drain while carrying out cleaning work in the Dilshad Garden area of east Delhi. The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the risks faced by daily wage labourers engaged in hazardous urban maintenance tasks.

Incident Reported During Afternoon Cleaning Work
According to officials, the emergency call was received by the Delhi Fire Services at around 2:12 pm. Soon after, rescue teams were dispatched to the location to begin an urgent operation. Personnel from multiple agencies, including the fire department and a boat rescue unit, worked together at the site, while local police also arrived quickly to manage the situation and support the effort.
Initial findings suggest that workers had been assigned to remove accumulated silt from the drain when the accident occurred. During the process, one of the workers reportedly lost his footing and fell into the water-filled channel, making it difficult for him to escape.
Rescue Efforts and Hospital Response
Authorities immediately secured the area to prevent further risk and to allow rescue teams to operate without obstruction. Despite continuous efforts by the responders, it took time to locate and retrieve the man from the drain.
Once he was pulled out, he was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital for emergency treatment. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival. Officials confirmed that all possible rescue measures had been attempted, but the delay in retrieving him proved critical.
Victim Identified, Eyewitness Account Shared
The deceased has been identified as Rahul, a resident of Sundar Nagari. His co-worker, Kapil, who lives in Seemapuri, was present at the site during the incident. According to his statement, both were engaged in routine cleaning when Rahul accidentally slipped and fell into the drain.
Kapil explained that they had been hired as daily wage workers for the task and were manually clearing debris when the incident unfolded suddenly. He stated that there were no immediate safety measures or protective systems in place that could have prevented the fall or aided a quick rescue.
Legal Action Initiated by Police
Following the incident, the police registered a case under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita at Seemapuri police station. Officials confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine whether there was any negligence or violation of safety norms at the work site.
The body has been sent to the mortuary at Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where a postmortem examination will be conducted to confirm the exact cause of death.
Concerns Over Worker Safety and Protocols
This incident has once again raised serious concerns about the working conditions of sanitation workers, especially those employed on a daily wage basis. Experts have often pointed out the lack of adequate safety equipment, training, and supervision in such operations.
Urban infrastructure maintenance frequently involves high-risk environments, particularly in open drains and sewer systems. Despite existing regulations, enforcement on the ground remains inconsistent, leaving workers vulnerable to accidents.
Authorities are expected to review the circumstances surrounding this case and assess whether proper guidelines were followed. Meanwhile, the incident has prompted renewed calls for stricter safety measures and accountability in civic operations.
