Accident – Five Killed After Car Catches Fire on Expressway
Accident – A devastating car fire on a major highway in Rajasthan has claimed five lives and left one person critically injured, prompting an ongoing investigation into the cause of the blaze.

A tragic incident unfolded on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway in Rajasthan’s Alwar district, where a moving vehicle suddenly caught fire late Wednesday night, leading to the death of five passengers. Police confirmed that the victims were returning from a धार्मिक pilgrimage to Vaishno Devi when the accident occurred near Maujpur.
Fire Breaks Out Suddenly on Highway
According to officials, the car was in motion when flames erupted unexpectedly, quickly engulfing the entire vehicle. Emergency services were alerted immediately, and fire brigade teams reached the scene without delay. Despite their swift response, the intensity of the blaze meant that the car was already severely damaged by the time the fire was brought under control, which reportedly took around 15 minutes.
Authorities stated that the speed at which the fire spread left the occupants with almost no opportunity to escape. The incident has raised serious concerns about vehicle safety, particularly in cases involving fuel systems.
Victims Identified as Residents of Madhya Pradesh
Police officials confirmed that the deceased included three women, a young girl, and a man. All five victims were residents of Sheopur district in Madhya Pradesh. Their journey had been a religious one, but it ended in tragedy as the vehicle caught fire on the return trip.
Due to the severity of the fire, the bodies were found in a highly charred condition. Officials reported that only skeletal remains could be recovered from the vehicle. These remains have been carefully preserved and will undergo DNA testing to establish the identities of the victims with certainty.
Possible Cause Linked to Electrical Fault
Preliminary findings suggest that a short circuit may have triggered the fire. Investigators indicated that the vehicle was powered by compressed natural gas (CNG), which can accelerate the spread of flames if ignited. This factor likely contributed to the rapid escalation of the fire, making escape extremely difficult for those inside.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to confirm the exact sequence of events and determine whether any mechanical failure or negligence played a role.
Driver Escapes but Suffers Severe Burns
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Vinod Kumar Mehar, managed to jump out of the burning car moments after the fire started. However, he sustained critical injuries, with reports indicating that he suffered burns over approximately 80 percent of his body.
He was initially taken to a nearby medical facility for emergency care before being referred to a hospital in Jaipur for specialized treatment. His condition remains serious, and doctors are closely monitoring his recovery.
Investigation and Safety Concerns
The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with vehicle fires, especially on high-speed highways. Officials have urged drivers to ensure regular maintenance of their vehicles, particularly electrical systems and fuel components, to minimize such risks.
Further updates are expected as forensic teams complete their analysis and authorities gather more evidence regarding the cause of the fire.
