RaniDurgavati – MP Government Renews Push to Rename Jabalpur Airport
RaniDurgavati – Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to preserving the legacy of tribal warrior queen Rani Durgavati, announcing that he will personally take up with the Central government the pending proposal to rename Jabalpur’s Dumna Airport in her honor.

The announcement came during events held in Jabalpur on Wednesday to mark the martyrdom anniversary of Rani Durgavati, one of central India’s most respected historical figures. The queen sacrificed her life on June 24, 1564, while resisting Mughal forces commanded by Asaf Khan.
Chief Minister Assures Follow-Up With Centre
Speaking at the commemorative programme, Mohan Yadav said the state government remains dedicated to ensuring proper recognition for Rani Durgavati’s contribution to Indian history. He stated that he would directly pursue the matter with the Union government to expedite consideration of the airport renaming proposal.
The Chief Minister highlighted that the state administration has taken several steps in recent years to honour the queen’s memory. Among these efforts was the naming of a major flyover in Jabalpur after Rani Durgavati, reflecting the government’s ongoing focus on preserving her legacy.
Assembly Resolution Yet to Receive Approval
The issue was raised during the event by Public Works Department Minister and senior BJP leader Rakesh Singh. He reminded attendees that the Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly had already approved a resolution seeking the renaming of Dumna Airport and forwarded it to the Centre for further action.
According to Singh, the proposal has remained pending despite being formally submitted. He urged the Chief Minister to ensure that the matter is resolved quickly so that the long-standing demand of residents across the Mahakaushal region can finally be fulfilled.
Opposition Questions Delay
The proposal has also drawn attention from opposition leaders. Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar questioned why the renaming process has not moved forward despite the BJP being in power both in Madhya Pradesh and at the national level.
Singhar argued that the public deserves clarity regarding the status of the proposal and called for a definitive timeline. He said that announcements alone would not satisfy public expectations and that concrete action is now required.
Importance of Jabalpur Airport
Dumna Airport, officially known as Jabalpur Airport, plays a significant role in Madhya Pradesh’s aviation network. Located about 20 kilometres from Jabalpur city, it serves as an important transportation hub for the Mahakaushal region.
In recent years, the airport has undergone substantial development, including infrastructure upgrades, expansion projects, and improved passenger amenities. Operated by the Airports Authority of India, it provides connectivity to several major Indian cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru.
Symbolic Tribute to a Revered Queen
Supporters of the proposal believe that naming the airport after Rani Durgavati would serve as an important tribute to her role in tribal history and her resistance against invading forces. The move is viewed as a recognition of the cultural and historical significance she continues to hold across central India.
Born in 1524, Rani Durgavati later married Gond ruler Dalpat Shah and became known for her leadership, courage, and administrative abilities. Her determination in defending her kingdom has made her a celebrated figure in Indian history.
Legacy Continues Across Madhya Pradesh
Every year, her martyrdom anniversary is observed as Balidan Diwas across Madhya Pradesh, particularly in the Mahakaushal region. The occasion attracts tributes from political leaders, social organisations, and local communities who regard her as a symbol of bravery, dignity, and tribal pride.
Even centuries after her sacrifice, Rani Durgavati remains an enduring source of inspiration, with growing calls for greater recognition of her contributions through public institutions and memorial initiatives.
