Space Exploration – India is preparing for a new chapter in space exploration, with ambitious missions, indigenous technology, and long-term scientific goals shaping the country’s future.
India’s second astronaut to travel into space, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, believes the coming decade will transform the nation’s position in global space exploration. Speaking during the Hyderabad launch of his book Second Orbit, Shukla shared his experiences from his journey to the International Space Station (ISS), reflected on India’s achievements in human spaceflight, and highlighted the country’s plans for future missions. He also encouraged young Indians to stay focused on their goals and contribute to the nation’s scientific progress.
A Title Inspired by India’s Space Legacy
Explaining the inspiration behind the title Second Orbit, Shukla said it is dedicated to India’s first astronaut, Rakesh Sharma, whose historic spaceflight in 1984 marked the country’s first human mission beyond Earth. Shukla described his own journey as the continuation of that remarkable legacy after a gap of more than four decades. According to him, the title represents both respect for the pioneers of India’s space programme and confidence in the country’s future achievements.
He added that the book is intended to preserve the story of India’s evolving human space journey while offering readers a closer look at the experiences that shaped his own career.
Personal Stories Beyond Public Appearances
Shukla said the book includes several experiences that he has never shared during public interactions. While speaking with students or audiences at events, time is often limited, making it difficult to explain the complete journey from his school days to becoming a fighter pilot and later an astronaut.
The autobiography provides a detailed account of his training, professional challenges, emotional moments, and preparations before travelling to space. It also offers readers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the demanding path that led him to represent India on an international mission.
Memorable Moment Aboard the International Space Station
Among the many unforgettable experiences from his mission, Shukla identified his interaction with Prime Minister Narendra Modi from the International Space Station as the most significant. He recalled that it was a proud moment because the Indian flag was prominently represented during the conversation, while Hindi was spoken during an official interaction from the orbital laboratory.
For Shukla, the occasion symbolised India’s expanding role in international space exploration and reflected the country’s growing confidence in advanced scientific missions.
Scientific Experiments to Support Future Missions
During his stay in space, Shukla carried out seven experiments developed by Indian researchers. He explained that each project focused on generating scientific knowledge required for future human space missions rather than serving as an isolated achievement.
Instead of selecting one experiment as the most important, he said every study would contribute to improving technologies and understanding needed for long-duration space travel, ultimately supporting India’s future astronauts and upcoming exploration programmes.
Strong Focus on Gaganyaan and Future Goals
Looking ahead, Shukla expressed confidence that India’s space programme is entering one of its most important phases. He pointed to the Gaganyaan mission as the country’s immediate priority and said it would pave the way for astronauts to travel aboard Indian launch vehicles from Indian soil.
He also referred to long-term plans that include establishing an Indian space station and eventually sending astronauts on lunar missions. According to him, these milestones will create significant opportunities for scientists, engineers, researchers, and students interested in contributing to India’s expanding space sector.
Why Hyderabad Was Chosen for the Book Launch
Shukla said Hyderabad was a meaningful venue for launching his autobiography because of its strong aerospace and defence ecosystem as well as its personal significance. His flying career began at the Indian Air Force Academy in Dundigal, making the city an important part of his professional journey.
Returning to Hyderabad for the launch, he said, felt like completing a circle—from the place where he started his aviation career to sharing the story of reaching space.
Advice for India’s Young Generation
Addressing students during the event, Shukla praised the curiosity and talent of today’s youth but observed that distractions often prevent them from reaching their full potential. He encouraged young people to identify meaningful goals, remain committed to them, and avoid losing focus.
He stressed that perseverance is equally important, saying lasting success is achieved through patience, consistent effort, and the determination to continue even when progress appears slow.
