ColdStorage – Owner Detained After Deadly Prayagraj Facility Collapse
ColdStorage – Police in Prayagraj have taken into custody the owner of a cold storage unit that partially collapsed in the Phaphamau area, resulting in the deaths of four workers and injuries to several others. The incident, which occurred on Monday afternoon, has prompted a formal investigation by district authorities.

Arrest and FIR Registered in Case
According to officials, Ansar Ahmad, who owns the cold storage facility, was detained on Tuesday for questioning. Law enforcement authorities confirmed that a First Information Report (FIR) was filed late Monday night against seven identified individuals, along with four to five others whose identities are yet to be confirmed.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Ganga Nagar), Kuldeep Gunawat, stated that Ahmad is currently being interrogated as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are working to establish accountability and determine whether negligence or violations contributed to the structural failure.
District Administration Orders Detailed Probe
In response to the tragedy, the district administration has initiated an official inquiry to uncover the causes behind the collapse. District Magistrate Manish Kumar Verma has assigned the investigation to Additional District Magistrate (Finance and Revenue), Vinita Singh.
Singh indicated that a preliminary report is expected within two days, while a comprehensive report will be submitted within a week. The probe will examine construction standards, maintenance practices, and regulatory compliance of the facility.
Casualties and Medical Treatment
The collapse took place in Chandapur village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Phaphamau police station. Officials confirmed that four workers lost their lives in the incident, while 14 others sustained injuries of varying severity.
The injured individuals were immediately transported to SRN Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Medical teams are monitoring their condition closely, and authorities have assured that all necessary care is being provided.
Questions Raised Over Licensing and Safety
The incident has raised serious concerns about safety standards and regulatory oversight. Police Commissioner Jogendra Kumar stated that the investigation will include a thorough review of the cold storage unit’s licensing status, including whether proper inspections were conducted before approval or renewal.
He emphasized that officials will scrutinize how a structure reportedly in poor condition was allowed to operate. Authorities have assured that strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible for lapses in safety or compliance.
Ammonia Leak Sparks Panic in Area
Following the collapse, an ammonia gas leak was reported from a storage tank within the facility. This led to panic among residents in the surrounding area, as emergency teams rushed to contain the situation and prevent further harm.
Officials confirmed that necessary precautions were taken to manage the gas leak and ensure public safety. However, the incident has intensified concerns about hazardous material handling and emergency preparedness at such facilities.
Focus on Accountability and Prevention
The tragedy has once again highlighted the need for stringent enforcement of building safety norms and regular inspections of industrial units. Authorities are expected to review existing policies and ensure that similar incidents do not occur in the future.
As the investigation progresses, officials aim to identify systemic failures, if any, and implement corrective measures. The outcome of the inquiry will play a crucial role in determining legal action and shaping future safety regulations.
