Veterans – South Korea Reaffirms Commitment to Honoring National Sacrifice

Veterans – South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday underscored the importance of honoring citizens who lost their lives while serving the nation, describing remembrance and respect for their sacrifice as a responsibility shared by society. His remarks came during the country’s Memorial Day ceremony, an annual observance dedicated to those who contributed to national defense, independence, and public safety.

National Memorial Ceremony Draws Thousands

The commemorative event took place at Seoul National Cemetery and brought together around 3,000 attendees, including military personnel, government representatives, decorated citizens, and relatives of those who made significant contributions to the country. The gathering served as an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of individuals who fought for Korea’s freedom and security throughout its history.

Among those present were family members of a Coast Guard officer who died last year while attempting to rescue a person stranded on a tidal flat. Relatives of two service members who lost their lives in a military helicopter accident earlier this year also attended the ceremony.

Commitment to Supporting Veterans and Families

Addressing the audience, President Lee said the nation must continue to preserve the legacy of those who served with dedication. He emphasized that recognizing their contributions is not only a gesture of gratitude but also an obligation that strengthens the foundations of society.

The president highlighted several government measures aimed at improving support for veterans and their families. He noted that legislation scheduled to take effect next year will broaden benefits available to families of independence activists. He also pointed to ongoing efforts to provide financial assistance to spouses of war veterans, describing the initiative as part of the government’s commitment to those who have sacrificed for the country.

Expanding Access to Veteran Healthcare

Lee reaffirmed plans to improve healthcare access for former service members by extending the network of veterans hospitals to underserved regions. Areas including Gangwon Province and Jeju Island are expected to benefit from these expansion efforts, allowing more veterans to receive medical care closer to their homes.

According to the president, a nation progresses when it properly recognizes the dedication of its citizens. He stated that honoring service and sacrifice remains essential for maintaining national unity and encouraging future generations to contribute to society.

Accountability and Historical Justice

In addition to praising those who served the country, Lee stressed the importance of accountability for actions that harmed the national community. He argued that respect for public service must be accompanied by efforts to address historical wrongdoing.

The president referenced a newly enacted law that will allow authorities to investigate and confiscate assets obtained unlawfully by individuals who collaborated with Japan during the colonial period. He said the measure is intended to reinforce historical accountability and discourage similar conduct in the future.

Greater Protection for Frontline Personnel

Lee also pledged stronger support for frontline workers, including members of the armed forces, police officers, firefighters, and Coast Guard personnel. He said the government would work to improve assistance programs for individuals injured while carrying out their duties, ensuring they receive appropriate care and support.

Confidence Amid Global Challenges

Speaking about current international uncertainties, the president acknowledged concerns over economic pressures linked to ongoing tensions in the Middle East. Despite these challenges, he expressed confidence in South Korea’s ability to overcome difficulties.

Lee said the country has repeatedly demonstrated resilience during periods of crisis and has consistently found strength through unity. He expressed optimism that the nation would once again draw on that spirit to navigate future challenges successfully.
