Cabinet approves new name for Jalalabad

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak confirmed that the cabinet had accepted the proposal to rename Jalalabad as Parshurampuri. He said residents had been seeking the change for a long time, citing the town’s association with Lord Parshuram.

According to Pathak, local people had urged the government to recognise Jalalabad as the birthplace of Lord Parshuram and rename the town accordingly. The state government accepted the demand after the proposal received the required approvals.

State Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna said the new name was intended to acknowledge the religious and cultural significance associated with the town. He described the decision as a tribute to the tradition linked with Lord Parshuram and the people of the area.

The renaming proposal had earlier been placed before the Union government and was approved last year. Union Minister Jitin Prasada, who represents the Shahjahanpur region, had welcomed the decision and described it as an important moment for people who identify with the Sanatan tradition.

Startup policy and mission receive approval

The cabinet also cleared the Uttar Pradesh Startup Policy 2026 and approved the creation of the Uttar Pradesh Startup Mission. The initiative is aimed at encouraging innovation, supporting entrepreneurs and expanding the startup ecosystem across the state.

Khanna said the mission’s steering committee will be formed under the Societies Registration Act and will be headed by the Chief Secretary. The government has proposed a startup fund of Rs 1,000 crore to support eligible ventures and early-stage businesses.

The policy includes provisions for prototype development assistance, seed capital support and yearly grants for incubators. The government expects the measures to improve access to funding and institutional support for new businesses operating in Uttar Pradesh.

Cashless healthcare cover for Home Guards

Another major cabinet decision relates to healthcare support for Home Guards and their families. The government approved cashless medical treatment of up to Rs 5 lakh for around 1.60 lakh Home Guards and their dependents.

The scheme is expected to provide financial relief to personnel during medical emergencies. It will extend health coverage to both serving Home Guards and eligible family members under the approved framework.

New universities and agricultural institutions cleared

The cabinet also approved proposals for the establishment of three private universities in different parts of Uttar Pradesh. These include Maharishi Mahesh Yogi International Agricultural University in Bilhaur, Ajay Kumar Garg University in Ghaziabad and Thakur Yugraj Singh University in Fatehpur.

In addition, approval was granted for a Horticulture College and Research Centre in Raebareli. The proposed institution is expected to support higher education and research in horticulture, agricultural practices and related fields.

Municipal bonds and pension changes included

Other decisions taken by the cabinet include amendments related to pension provisions for the chairman and members of the Uttar Pradesh Public Service Commission. The cabinet also approved plans for municipal bond issuance by the Gorakhpur and Moradabad municipal corporations.

The bond proposals are intended to help the two urban bodies raise funds for infrastructure and development projects. With the latest set of approvals, the state government has combined administrative, welfare, education, entrepreneurship and urban development measures in one cabinet meeting.
