Security – Pakistan Records Sharp Rise in Terror Attacks During May
Security – Pakistan witnessed a significant increase in militant violence during May, according to a recent security assessment that highlighted growing concerns over terrorism-related threats across the country. The latest findings indicate that armed groups became more active after a short period of reduced violence, leading to a noticeable rise in attacks and casualties.
Attacks Increase Across the Country
A monthly report released by a conflict-monitoring organization revealed that 128 terrorist incidents were reported nationwide in May. This marked a substantial increase from the 101 attacks recorded in April, reflecting a 27 percent month-on-month rise. The data suggests that militant networks regained operational strength, resulting in a more challenging security environment.
The impact of these attacks was severe. During the month, 71 civilians lost their lives, along with 68 members of the security forces and six individuals associated with local peace committees. In addition, 147 civilians, 35 security personnel, and three peace committee members sustained injuries in separate incidents.
Civilian and Security Force Casualties Climb
The report noted a sharp rise in fatalities compared with the previous month. Civilian deaths nearly doubled, increasing from 37 in April to 71 in May. Losses among security personnel also rose dramatically, jumping from 28 to 68 during the same period.
These figures underline the growing risks faced by both ordinary citizens and law enforcement agencies as militant activities expanded across multiple regions.
Surge in Suicide Bombings Raises Concerns
One of the most alarming developments during May was the increased use of suicide attacks. Authorities documented six such incidents during the month, including four vehicle-borne suicide bombings.
These attacks caused heavy losses, resulting in the deaths of 34 security personnel and nine civilians. The rise is particularly significant because only one suicide bombing had been reported in March and another in April. The latest figures indicate a renewed reliance on this tactic by extremist groups operating within the country.
Balochistan Emerges as the Hardest-Hit Region
Among all provinces, Balochistan experienced the most serious deterioration in security conditions. The province recorded 71 terrorist attacks in May, compared with 34 incidents during April. This represented an increase of more than 100 percent within a single month.
The region also witnessed a worrying rise in abduction cases. Out of 54 kidnappings reported nationwide during May, 52 took place in Balochistan, highlighting the growing challenges faced by local authorities in maintaining public safety.
Security Operations Intensified
Despite the rise in militant activity, security forces continued extensive counterterrorism operations throughout the country. According to the report, authorities killed 270 militants and detained 15 others during various operations conducted in May.
Most of the militants were eliminated in areas formerly included in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas, where 128 deaths were recorded. Another 62 militants were killed in different parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, while 71 were eliminated in Balochistan. One militant was reported killed in Punjab province.
Ongoing Security Challenges
The latest assessment highlights the complex security challenges confronting Pakistan. While law enforcement agencies have increased counterterrorism efforts and achieved significant operational successes, the rise in attacks, casualties, suicide bombings, and kidnappings indicates that militant groups remain capable of carrying out large-scale violence. Security experts believe continued vigilance and coordinated action will be necessary to address the evolving threat landscape in the months ahead.
