Peacekeeping – Indian Army Officer Calls for Diplomatic Push to Rebuild Lebanon
Peacekeeping – An Indian Army officer serving with the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Lebanon has stressed the importance of diplomatic engagement to secure lasting peace in the conflict-affected nation. Major Abhilasha Barak, recently honoured by the United Nations for her contribution to gender advocacy, said sustained dialogue and continued adherence to the ceasefire are essential steps toward rebuilding communities that have suffered extensive damage during the ongoing unrest.

Focus on Long-Term Recovery
Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, Barak expressed hope that negotiations among the concerned parties would continue and help preserve the fragile ceasefire. According to her, restoring stability in Lebanon requires more than repairing damaged infrastructure. She emphasized that communities also need support to overcome the emotional and psychological impact left by years of violence and uncertainty.
Barak noted that reconstruction should involve governments, local communities, and international peacekeeping forces working together. She said a collective effort would be necessary to help Lebanon recover from both physical destruction and the lasting effects of trauma experienced by residents.
UN Recognition for Gender Advocacy
Earlier this year, Barak received the 2025 Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award from United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The award recognizes military personnel who have made significant contributions toward advancing the role and welfare of women in areas affected by conflict.
While presenting the honour, Guterres praised Barak’s leadership and community outreach efforts. He highlighted her work with women and girls through education, healthcare awareness, and vocational initiatives, describing her contribution as impactful even under difficult operational conditions.
Role in the UN Mission
Barak serves as the Engagement Team Commander and Gender Focal Point with the Indian Battalion deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The mission operates in southern Lebanon, where tensions between Israel and the Iran-backed Hezbollah group have intensified amid broader regional instability.
UNIFIL remains one of the most challenging peacekeeping operations currently undertaken by the United Nations. Several peacekeepers have lost their lives in recent months while carrying out their duties in the conflict zone, highlighting the risks faced by personnel deployed in the region.
Regional Conflict Continues to Influence Stability
Although a ceasefire arrangement helped reduce large-scale hostilities, violations have continued to occur, and many parts of Lebanon remain heavily damaged. The broader regional situation, including tensions involving Iran, continues to affect prospects for lasting peace.
Developments in the region also carry international implications. Concerns surrounding maritime routes and energy supplies have drawn attention from several countries, including India, which closely monitors disruptions that could affect fuel imports and economic stability.
Empowering Women Through Community Outreach
Reflecting on her work in Lebanon, Barak said one of her primary responsibilities has been building trust within local communities, particularly among women and adolescent girls who were often hesitant to engage with male peacekeepers.
To address these challenges, her team introduced skill-development programmes designed to improve economic independence and self-reliance. The initiatives included vocational training along with educational and health awareness sessions.
She added that peacekeepers also organised physical fitness programmes, recreational events, and cultural exchange activities aimed at strengthening community participation and encouraging social interaction.
Trailblazing Career in the Indian Army
Major Barak has earned recognition beyond her peacekeeping role. She became the first woman combat helicopter pilot in the Indian Army, marking a significant milestone in the country’s military history. In addition to her aviation achievements, she has also served as an air traffic controller, demonstrating expertise across multiple operational roles within the armed forces.
