MilitaryExercise – Indian Army Concludes Major Multinational Drill in Meghalaya
MilitaryExercise – The Indian Army recently hosted the first edition of Exercise PRAGATI 2026 at the Joint Training Node in Umroi, Meghalaya, bringing together military personnel from India and 12 friendly foreign nations. Conducted from May 18 to May 31, the multinational exercise was designed to strengthen defence cooperation, improve operational coordination, and deepen ties among participating countries.

More than 400 military personnel from 13 countries, including India, took part in the training programme. The exercise concentrated on counter-insurgency operations in semi-mountainous and jungle environments, reflecting the challenges often faced in complex operational settings. Alongside field exercises, participants engaged in tactical discussions, technology-focused sessions, sports events, cultural interactions, and wellness activities.
Training Focused on Modern Operational Challenges
According to Brigadier Mayur Shekatkar, the exercise served as a significant platform for military collaboration. He noted that soldiers participated in a range of specialised training activities, including rock-climbing techniques, improvised explosive device response procedures, helicopter-based operations, tactical manoeuvres, and rapid-response scenarios.
The training was structured to help participating forces improve their operational capabilities while gaining practical experience in challenging terrain. By working together in realistic situations, soldiers had opportunities to understand different approaches to military planning and execution.
Building Partnerships Beyond the Battlefield
Officials highlighted that Exercise PRAGATI was not limited to military drills alone. The programme also encouraged interaction among participants through sports competitions, recreational activities, and cultural programmes. These engagements helped create stronger personal and professional relationships among soldiers from different nations.
Yoga sessions were also incorporated into the schedule, offering participants an opportunity to experience a practice widely associated with physical and mental well-being. Organisers said these activities contributed to a balanced training environment while promoting mutual respect and understanding among the contingents.
Aim to Enhance Regional Cooperation
Exercise Director Colonel Sandeep Poonia explained that PRAGATI stands for Partnership of Regional Armies for Growth and Transformation in the Indian Ocean Region. He said the initiative was launched with the objective of improving cooperation, enhancing interoperability, and strengthening trust among friendly countries.
Colonel Poonia stated that the exercise brought together around 400 personnel from 12 partner nations who trained collectively over two weeks. The primary emphasis remained on counter-insurgency operations conducted in jungle and semi-mountainous terrain, enabling participating forces to exchange expertise and operational experiences.
Technology and Knowledge Sharing at the Core
A major aspect of the exercise involved discussions on emerging technologies and their growing role in modern military operations. Participants shared best practices and explored ways to integrate advanced capabilities into operational planning.
Military experts also discussed evolving techniques, tactics, and procedures used in contemporary security environments. These exchanges allowed delegates to gain insights into new operational concepts and understand how technological developments can influence future missions.
International Participants Praise the Initiative
Representatives from participating countries expressed appreciation for the opportunity to train alongside the Indian Army. Philippines Marine Corps Staff Sergeant Mary Simongo thanked the organisers, facilitators, and support teams for hosting the event and providing a valuable learning experience.
She said the training helped participants gain practical knowledge and fresh perspectives that could be applied within their own military organisations and communities. Simongo also acknowledged the contributions of other international delegates, noting that the exchange of ideas and experiences proved highly beneficial.
The visiting contingent member further praised the hospitality extended by the Indian Army, describing the experience as both professionally rewarding and personally memorable. Officials believe initiatives such as Exercise PRAGATI can contribute significantly to strengthening defence partnerships and fostering long-term regional cooperation.
