James Capers Jr. Honoured After Decades-Long Wait
Capers was recognised for his conduct during a reconnaissance mission in Vietnam in 1967. According to details released by the White House, he led a small Marine team tasked with locating a North Vietnamese military base. During the operation, the unit encountered a significantly larger enemy force and came under repeated attacks.
Despite sustaining multiple serious injuries, Capers continued directing his team, coordinating support and helping organise evacuation efforts. Trump highlighted that Capers maintained command responsibilities even while critically wounded. The president also acknowledged that Capers had originally been recommended for the Medal of Honor decades ago, but administrative delays prevented the award from being completed after the death of his commanding officer.
John W. Ripley Remembered for Vietnam War Heroics
The Medal of Honor was also awarded posthumously to Colonel John W. Ripley for actions carried out during a major North Vietnamese offensive in April 1972. At the time, Ripley served as a senior Marine adviser and played a decisive role in slowing an advancing enemy force.
Military records show that Ripley repeatedly moved beneath a bridge while facing enemy fire to place and connect large quantities of explosives. After several hours of work, the charges were detonated, destroying the bridge and disrupting the enemy advance. Officials said the operation proved critical in delaying opposing forces during the conflict.
Nicholas Dockery Recognised for Afghanistan Mission
Retired Army Major Nicholas Dockery received the Medal of Honor for actions during a Taliban ambush in Afghanistan’s Kapisa Province in October 2012. The White House stated that Dockery repeatedly exposed himself to danger while assisting wounded soldiers and helping coordinate defensive operations.
During the attack, he reportedly rescued injured personnel, organised counter-offensive efforts and directed air support while under sustained enemy fire. Trump praised Dockery’s determination and leadership, noting that he continued assisting fellow soldiers until the final stages of the engagement.
Nation Reflects on Military Sacrifice
Concluding the ceremony, Trump said the United States remains indebted to men and women who place themselves in harm’s way while serving their country. He connected the awards to the approaching 250th anniversary of America’s founding in 2026, describing the recipients as examples of dedication and sacrifice that continue to inspire future generations.
