Addressing the media in Bijbehara town of Anantnag district, Abdullah made it clear that his administration would not tolerate any form of lawlessness and was committed to maintaining peace across the Union Territory.
Chief Minister Promises Firm Governance
The Chief Minister emphasized that his government is determined to prevent any situation resembling disorder or unchecked vigilantism. He stated that preserving stability and ensuring public safety remain top priorities. According to Abdullah, certain elements are attempting to disrupt harmony by encouraging conflict, but such efforts will not succeed under his leadership.
He underlined that Jammu and Kashmir is entering a new phase focused on peace and progress. According to officials, Chopan was transporting cattle and reportedly had valid permission for the activity. It is alleged that he was chased and assaulted by four individuals, prompting him to jump into a stream in an attempt to escape. The incident took place near the Makerkoot tunnel area on Sunday afternoon.
Police have registered a case at the Ramsoo police station, and four suspects have already been taken into custody. The SIT, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Banihal, Surinder Singh Biloria, will conduct a thorough probe to establish the facts.
Public Reaction and Highway Protest
The incident triggered strong reactions from local residents and the victim’s family. On Monday, protesters blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) at Makerkoot for more than three hours, demanding justice and swift action against those involved.
Family members alleged that Chopan was targeted by cow vigilantes, while police maintained that investigations are ongoing and all aspects of the case are being examined. The protest highlighted rising concerns over safety and the need for stricter enforcement of law and order.
