LawAndOrder – Omar Abdullah Vows Strict Action After Ramban Incident
LawAndOrder- Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Tuesday strongly condemned the recent incident in Ramban district, where a man reportedly lost his life after jumping into a river while allegedly being pursued by a group of cow vigilantes. Addressing the media in Bijbehara town of Anantnag district, Abdullah made it clear that his administration would not tolerate any form of lawlessness and was committed to maintaining peace across the Union Territory.

Chief Minister Promises Firm Governance
The Chief Minister emphasized that his government is determined to prevent any situation resembling disorder or unchecked vigilantism. He stated that preserving stability and ensuring public safety remain top priorities. According to Abdullah, certain elements are attempting to disrupt harmony by encouraging conflict, but such efforts will not succeed under his leadership.
He underlined that Jammu and Kashmir is entering a new phase focused on peace and progress. The administration aims to foster an environment where citizens feel secure and communal tensions are kept at bay. Abdullah reiterated that no individual or group would be allowed to take the law into their own hands.
Call for Strict Action Against Accused
Abdullah also appealed to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha to ensure that those responsible for the incident face strict legal consequences. He said decisive action would send a strong message that any attempt to disturb public order will be dealt with firmly.
The Chief Minister stressed that accountability is essential in such cases, and the government would not show leniency toward those who threaten peace. His remarks come amid growing public concern over incidents involving vigilantism and their impact on social stability.
Investigation Underway With SIT Formation
Authorities have initiated a detailed investigation into the case. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to examine the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the victim, identified as Tanveer Ahmad Chopan, a resident of Pogal.
According to officials, Chopan was transporting cattle and reportedly had valid permission for the activity. It is alleged that he was chased and assaulted by four individuals, prompting him to jump into a stream in an attempt to escape. The incident took place near the Makerkoot tunnel area on Sunday afternoon.
Police have registered a case at the Ramsoo police station, and four suspects have already been taken into custody. The SIT, led by Sub-Divisional Police Officer Banihal, Surinder Singh Biloria, will conduct a thorough probe to establish the facts.
Public Reaction and Highway Protest
The incident triggered strong reactions from local residents and the victim’s family. On Monday, protesters blocked the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) at Makerkoot for more than three hours, demanding justice and swift action against those involved.
Family members alleged that Chopan was targeted by cow vigilantes, while police maintained that investigations are ongoing and all aspects of the case are being examined. The protest highlighted rising concerns over safety and the need for stricter enforcement of law and order.
Search Efforts Continue Despite Grim Outlook
Search operations have been launched to locate Chopan, although officials have indicated that the chances of survival appear low. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local police, and volunteers are actively involved in the search.
Authorities are continuing efforts in the stream area where Chopan was reportedly swept away. The administration has assured that all possible resources are being deployed to trace him and bring clarity to the situation.
Focus on Maintaining Peace
The Ramban incident has once again brought attention to the importance of maintaining law and order in sensitive regions. The government’s response, including the formation of an SIT and the arrest of suspects, indicates a commitment to addressing the issue promptly.
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s statements reflect a broader effort to reinforce governance and prevent incidents that could disturb communal harmony. As investigations proceed, the administration faces the challenge of ensuring justice while preserving public confidence.
