Iranian officials maintain that the operation was carried out within the framework of international law and was intended to counter what they described as aggression directed at Iranian territory. The remarks reflect growing diplomatic friction between Tehran and European governments amid ongoing regional instability.

Iran Defends Military Action

Speaking on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei rejected the EU’s criticism and insisted that Tehran acted in accordance with its right to self-defense. According to Iranian authorities, the targeted sites had been used to support attacks against Iran, making them legitimate military objectives under its interpretation of international law.

Baqaei stated that countries have a responsibility to ensure their land, military facilities, and resources are not used as platforms for attacks against other nations. He argued that Iran’s actions were a direct response to threats originating beyond its borders and were intended to protect national security.

Accusations of Double Standards

In comments shared through social media, the Iranian spokesperson accused the European Union of applying different standards when evaluating conflicts in the region. He argued that European leaders were unfairly criticizing Tehran while failing to adequately address what Iran considers unlawful actions by its opponents.

According to Baqaei, the EU should remain committed to the principles outlined in the United Nations Charter and uphold international legal standards consistently. He further suggested that blaming a country for responding to military attacks undermines efforts to maintain credibility in global diplomacy.

European Union Condemns Strike on Kuwait

The exchange follows an official statement released by the European Union on May 29. In that statement, the 27-member bloc condemned Iran’s strike against Kuwait and expressed support for the Kuwaiti government and its citizens.

European officials described the attack as a violation of Kuwait’s sovereignty under international law. The EU warned that such actions risk increasing tensions across an already volatile region and could negatively affect broader efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Gulf.

The statement emphasized the bloc’s solidarity with Kuwait and reiterated concerns about the potential consequences of military escalation.

Call for Compliance With International Law

Alongside its criticism, the European Union urged all parties involved in the conflict to respect international legal obligations and humanitarian principles. The bloc stressed the importance of adhering to the United Nations Charter and avoiding actions that could further intensify regional confrontations.

European leaders also highlighted the need to implement relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions related to the ongoing crisis. The EU said diplomatic engagement and restraint remain essential to reducing tensions and preventing a wider conflict.

Focus on Regional De-Escalation

The European Union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at lowering tensions in the Middle East. Officials emphasized that sustainable solutions can only be achieved through dialogue and adherence to international norms.

As disagreements between Tehran and European capitals continue, the latest exchange underscores the deep divisions surrounding the interpretation of recent military actions and the broader security situation involving Iran, the United States, Israel, and several Gulf nations. With regional tensions remaining high, both sides appear determined to defend their positions on the international stage.
