HealthAlert – South Korea Expands Congo Travel Restrictions Over Ebola Spread
HealthAlert – South Korea has widened its travel restrictions for parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as concerns grow over the worsening Ebola outbreak in the central African nation. The country’s foreign ministry announced on Friday that stricter travel warnings will now apply to additional regions where infections and suspected deaths continue to rise.

Highest Travel Alert Issued for Ituri Province
Under the latest decision, South Korea raised the travel warning for Ituri Province to Level 4, the most serious category in its four-stage travel advisory system. The measure came into force at 2 p.m. Friday following an increase in Ebola-related fatalities reported in the region.
Authorities said the move reflects growing concerns about the public health situation and the risk posed to travelers. A Level 4 alert effectively bans travel to the designated area, except under special government approval.
Three Provinces Now Classified as No-Travel Zones
With the updated advisory, South Korea now considers three provinces in the Democratic Republic of the Congo as no-travel areas. These include Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, all of which have experienced repeated Ebola outbreaks in recent years.
The foreign ministry warned that South Korean citizens who enter or remain in these regions without exceptional passport authorization could face legal consequences under national passport regulations. Officials urged travelers and residents to strictly follow government guidance until the health crisis stabilizes.
Additional Regions Placed Under Departure Advisory
Apart from the Level 4 warning, South Korea also issued a Level 3 travel alert for several other parts of the Congo. This advisory recommends that citizens leave affected areas unless travel is absolutely necessary.
The Level 3 warning covers locations within 50 kilometers of the border with the Central African Republic, along with seven provinces including Bas-Uele and Haut-Uele. Authorities believe these areas could face increased health risks because of population movement and regional connectivity.
A separate special travel advisory remains active for the rest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo as officials continue to monitor developments related to the Ebola outbreak.
Uganda Also Included in Expanded Health Precautions
The latest measures follow a separate decision announced a day earlier involving Uganda. South Korea recently placed the entire country under a special travel advisory after health authorities identified Uganda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan as priority quarantine management countries.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency said enhanced monitoring and quarantine procedures are being implemented for travelers arriving from these nations. Officials aim to prevent the possible spread of the virus through international travel routes.
Rising Ebola Cases Raise International Concern
Foreign media reports indicate that eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo are witnessing a rapid increase in Ebola infections. More than 160 suspected deaths linked to the disease have reportedly been recorded as health agencies attempt to contain the outbreak.
Ebola is a severe viral illness that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and has historically caused deadly outbreaks across parts of Africa. International health organizations have repeatedly stressed the importance of early containment, border monitoring, and public awareness to prevent wider transmission.
South Korea’s foreign ministry stated that it will continue assessing the situation closely and may revise travel advisories further if the outbreak worsens. Authorities also advised citizens to avoid non-essential travel to affected regions and follow updates issued by health and diplomatic agencies.
