The blaze erupted late Wednesday night at Viva Energy’s refinery located in Geelong, a city situated about 65 kilometers southwest of Melbourne. Emergency services responded quickly after the fire started around 11 p.m. local time, but flames were still active into Thursday morning, raising concerns about operational continuity.
This refinery holds strategic importance, as it is one of only two functioning refineries in the country and contributes roughly 10 percent of Australia’s total fuel production. Any prolonged disruption at the site could have broader implications for fuel distribution nationwide.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer Michael McGuinness explained that the fire was fueled by hydrocarbons present within the unit, which contributed to its intensity. The affected area spanned approximately 30 by 30 meters, and responders also reported several minor explosions during the incident.

Despite the scale of the fire, authorities confirmed that all personnel at the site were safely accounted for, and no injuries were reported. Emergency teams continued working to control and eventually extinguish the blaze, which was expected to burn for several hours.
