Energy – Fire at Geelong Refinery Raises Concerns Over Fuel Supply
Energy – A major fire at an oil refinery in Australia has drawn attention to potential disruptions in the country’s fuel availability, with authorities confirming that a technical fault triggered the incident.

Fire Breaks Out at Key Refinery Facility
The blaze erupted late Wednesday night at Viva Energy’s refinery located in Geelong, a city situated about 65 kilometers southwest of Melbourne. Emergency services responded quickly after the fire started around 11 p.m. local time, but flames were still active into Thursday morning, raising concerns about operational continuity.
This refinery holds strategic importance, as it is one of only two functioning refineries in the country and contributes roughly 10 percent of Australia’s total fuel production. Any prolonged disruption at the site could have broader implications for fuel distribution nationwide.
Cause Linked to Equipment Malfunction
Officials have indicated that the fire was likely caused by a failure in refinery equipment. Michelle Cowling, Deputy Commissioner of Fire Rescue Victoria, stated in a radio interview that preliminary findings point toward a mechanical issue as the source of the incident.
She also emphasized that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out to determine the exact sequence of events that led to the fire. Authorities are expected to closely examine safety systems and maintenance procedures as part of this process.
Impact on Petrol Production Expected
Australia’s Energy Minister, Chris Bowen, acknowledged that the incident may temporarily affect petrol output. However, he clarified that there is currently no indication of disruptions to diesel or aviation fuel production.
Bowen noted that while petrol supply could face short-term challenges, production is expected to continue. He added that the government is monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
Timing Adds to Existing Supply Pressures
The refinery fire comes at a time when global oil markets are already under strain due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. Officials have described the timing of the incident as less than ideal, given the existing pressure on fuel supply chains.
Earlier this year, the federal government reached an agreement to extend financial support for domestic refining operations, including the Geelong facility and another refinery in Brisbane. The deal aims to ensure the long-term viability of local fuel production through the next decade.
Emergency Response and Fire Details
According to Fire Rescue Victoria, the fire originated in the refinery’s motor gasoline processing unit. Flames reportedly reached heights of up to 60 meters, making containment efforts challenging for emergency crews.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Michael McGuinness explained that the fire was fueled by hydrocarbons present within the unit, which contributed to its intensity. The affected area spanned approximately 30 by 30 meters, and responders also reported several minor explosions during the incident.
No Injuries Reported Amid Ongoing Efforts
Despite the scale of the fire, authorities confirmed that all personnel at the site were safely accounted for, and no injuries were reported. Emergency teams continued working to control and eventually extinguish the blaze, which was expected to burn for several hours.
Officials have prioritized safety while managing the situation, ensuring that both workers and nearby communities remain protected as firefighting operations continue.
As investigations proceed and damage assessments are carried out, attention will remain on how quickly the refinery can resume normal operations and what impact the incident will ultimately have on Australia’s fuel supply.
