Earthquake – Mild Tremor Recorded in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh Region
Earthquake – A low-intensity earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale was recorded in Uttarakhand’s Pithoragarh district early Tuesday morning, according to data released by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS). The tremor occurred at 07:07 AM Indian Standard Time and was felt in parts of the surrounding region. Authorities confirmed that there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property following the incident.

Details of the Early Morning Tremor
The NCS reported that the earthquake originated at a latitude of 30.285 North and a longitude of 80.553 East. It struck at a relatively shallow depth of 5 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface. Seismic events at such depths are typically more noticeable to people living nearby, even when the magnitude is not particularly high.
Officials shared the information through their official communication channels, noting that the tremor was minor and did not trigger any emergency response. Residents in certain areas reported light shaking, but the situation remained calm overall.
No Damage or Casualties Reported
Local administration has stated that no casualties or structural damage have been recorded so far. Routine checks were carried out to assess any possible impact, but authorities confirmed that normal life continued without disruption.
Experts often note that smaller earthquakes like this are not uncommon in the Himalayan region, which is considered seismically active due to tectonic movements between the Indian and Eurasian plates. While such tremors may cause brief concern, they rarely lead to serious consequences when the magnitude remains low.
Recent Seismic Activity in the Region
This event comes just days after another earthquake was recorded on Sunday morning in the Indian Ocean. That tremor measured 4.9 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres. The NCS reported its coordinates at latitude 1.806 North and longitude 94.924 East.
Although the Indian Ocean earthquake was stronger in magnitude compared to the Uttarakhand tremor, its offshore location reduced the likelihood of any major impact on populated areas. No significant damage or warning alerts were associated with that event either.
Understanding Earthquake Depth and Impact
Seismologists classify earthquakes based on their depth, which plays a key role in determining their potential impact. Earthquakes can occur anywhere from the Earth’s surface down to about 700 kilometres.
Shallow earthquakes, defined as those occurring between 0 and 70 kilometres below the surface, tend to produce stronger ground shaking. This is because seismic waves have less distance to travel before reaching the surface, making them more intense and noticeable.
Intermediate earthquakes occur at depths ranging from 70 to 300 kilometres, while deep earthquakes are those that originate between 300 and 700 kilometres beneath the surface. Events deeper than 70 kilometres are often referred to as deep-focus earthquakes.
Preparedness Remains Important
Even though Tuesday’s tremor was minor, experts emphasize the importance of preparedness in earthquake-prone regions. Awareness of safety measures, proper building standards, and timely communication can significantly reduce risks during stronger seismic events.
Authorities continue to monitor seismic activity closely and advise residents to remain informed through official updates. While no immediate concerns have been raised, the region’s geological characteristics mean that periodic tremors are expected.
