Disaster – Deadly Fire at Sri Lankan Elderly Home Leaves Eleven Dead
Disaster – A tragic fire at an elderly care facility in Sri Lanka has claimed the lives of at least 11 people and left several others injured, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The incident occurred at a residential home for senior citizens in the Kalutara district, triggering a large-scale rescue effort and an official investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Fire Breaks Out at Care Facility
The fire erupted on Wednesday evening at approximately 5:30 p.m. at the Mawpiya Sevana Elderly Care Home, located in Anguruwatota, around 65 kilometers southeast of Colombo. Emergency responders, local residents, and police officers worked together to contain the flames and evacuate those trapped inside the building.
According to police officials, ten residents were found dead at the scene after the fire was extinguished. Another resident, who had been rushed to Horana Base Hospital for treatment, later died from injuries sustained during the incident.
Rescue Operation Saves Dozens
Authorities reported that 51 residents were successfully evacuated from the facility during the rescue operation. While many escaped without major injuries, seven people remain hospitalized and are receiving medical care.
The swift response by emergency teams and community members helped prevent the loss of additional lives. Officials stated that rescue efforts continued until all residents were accounted for and moved to safety.
Investigation Ordered Into Cause
A magistrate has directed a formal inquiry to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Investigators are currently examining evidence from the site and gathering statements from witnesses and staff members connected to the facility.
Early information suggested that a gas cylinder may have exploded, potentially accelerating the spread of the fire through the building. However, authorities emphasized that no definitive conclusion has been reached and that the exact cause remains under investigation.
Temporary Shelter Arranged for Survivors
Following the evacuation, the displaced residents were provided temporary accommodation at a nearby school. Local authorities and social service agencies have begun coordinating efforts to relocate them to a safer and more suitable facility.
Officials said arrangements are being made to ensure that the elderly residents continue receiving necessary care, medical attention, and support while longer-term housing solutions are finalized.
Growing Focus on Safety Measures
The incident has renewed attention on fire safety standards and emergency preparedness in residential care institutions. Authorities are expected to review safety procedures and assess whether additional measures are required to protect vulnerable residents in similar facilities across the country.
As the investigation continues, families of the victims and survivors await answers regarding the circumstances that led to one of the deadliest care home fires reported in Sri Lanka in recent years.
