Diplomacy – Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties during Xi’s visit to Pyongyang, a trip widely viewed as an effort by Beijing to reinforce its longstanding relationship with its neighboring ally.
According to reports released by official media in both countries, the leaders focused on expanding cooperation across several sectors while highlighting the importance of their historic partnership. Notably, public statements following the talks did not address North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, a subject that has long dominated international discussions surrounding Pyongyang.
Grand Reception Marks Xi’s Arrival
Xi’s arrival in the North Korean capital was met with an elaborate state welcome. At Pyongyang International Airport, Kim Jong Un and his wife Ri Sol Ju personally greeted Xi and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan.
The Chinese delegation later attended a large ceremonial event in the city’s central square. Thousands of residents participated in the welcome, waving flags and celebrating the relationship between the two nations. Public spaces were decorated with Chinese and North Korean flags, large portraits of both leaders, and banners emphasizing friendship and cooperation.
The day concluded with a formal banquet hosted by Kim in honor of Xi and the visiting delegation.
Leaders Emphasize Economic and Strategic Cooperation
During their summit discussions, Xi expressed China’s readiness to broaden collaboration in areas including agriculture, trade, infrastructure development, and technology. Chinese state media reported that both sides also discussed enhancing coordination on issues related to national security and sovereignty.
Kim described relations with China as a top strategic priority for North Korea. He praised Xi’s decision to choose Pyongyang as a destination for an overseas visit, calling it a strong sign of support for his country.
North Korean state media also reported that Kim reiterated support for Beijing’s position on Taiwan, commonly referred to as the “one-China principle.” The two leaders reportedly exchanged views on regional and international developments and agreed to deepen strategic coordination.
China Seeks to Maintain Regional Influence
For decades, China has remained North Korea’s most significant economic partner and diplomatic supporter. The relationship has often played a crucial role in regional stability, particularly during periods of heightened international tensions.
In recent years, however, North Korea has expanded cooperation with Russia, including military and economic exchanges. This development has prompted questions about Beijing’s influence in Pyongyang.

Economic Links Continue to Recover
Economic cooperation was another important theme of the visit. Trade between the two countries has steadily rebounded following disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Transportation links have also resumed, including direct flights and passenger rail services. Xi reportedly encouraged both countries to use the reopening of travel connections as an opportunity to increase exchanges between their citizens and strengthen economic ties.
