Bilateral Discussions Focus on Expanding Cooperation

After arriving in Paramaribo on Wednesday, Jaishankar received a warm welcome from Suriname’s Foreign Minister Melvin Bouva. The two leaders later held formal discussions covering several areas of mutual interest as both countries explored new opportunities to deepen cooperation.

The Indian minister also participated in the 9th Joint Commission Meeting alongside senior officials and representatives from both nations. The talks reviewed the current state of bilateral relations and explored future collaborations across multiple sectors. According to statements shared after the meeting, discussions included trade, investment, digital development, defence cooperation, energy, healthcare, mobility, and cultural exchanges.

Jaishankar expressed confidence that the outcomes of the discussions would help broaden and strengthen ties between India and Suriname in the coming years.

Meeting With Suriname President

During the visit, Jaishankar also met Suriname President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons and conveyed greetings from the people and government of India. The meeting highlighted the shared commitment of both nations to further develop their historic partnership.

The Indian minister noted that India and Suriname share deep-rooted historical and cultural links, particularly because of the large Indian-origin population living in the South American nation. Both sides discussed ways to unlock the full potential of the relationship through closer cooperation and people-to-people engagement.

Tribute to Indian Indentured Labourers

As part of his engagements, Jaishankar visited Marienburg to pay tribute at the Monument for the Fallen Heroes. The memorial honours Indian indentured labourers, also known as Girmityas, who lost their lives during the struggle against colonial rule in 1902.

Remembering their sacrifices, the minister said their fight for dignity and justice remains an enduring inspiration. He highlighted the contribution of Indian-origin communities overseas in preserving the values of freedom and resilience during difficult periods of history.

Interaction With Indian Community

Jaishankar also interacted with members of the Indian community in Suriname and spoke about India’s ongoing development and transformation initiatives. During the gathering, he reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting Suriname’s progress and prosperity through reliable partnership and cooperation.

The interaction reflected the strong cultural connection between the two countries, with the Indian diaspora continuing to play an important role in maintaining historic ties.

Visits to Historic Memorials

The External Affairs Minister additionally paid respects at the Baba and Mai monument, which commemorates the arrival of the first Indians in Suriname. He also visited the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in central Paramaribo before beginning his official bilateral engagements.

The visit is being viewed as an important step in expanding India’s engagement with Suriname and the wider Caribbean and South American region through stronger diplomatic, economic, and cultural cooperation.
