Diplomacy – Iran Says Discussions With US Continue as No Final Deal Reached
Diplomacy – Iran has stated that negotiations with the United States are still underway and that no formal agreement has been concluded so far. The clarification came from Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, who said that communication between the two countries remains active as both sides continue to exchange messages regarding key issues.
The comments were made during an interview with Iran’s state broadcaster, shortly after US President Donald Trump publicly outlined several conditions he believes should be included in any future understanding between Washington and Tehran. Trump also indicated that a decision regarding the ongoing diplomatic efforts could be made in the near future.
Iran Prioritises End to Conflict
According to Baghaei, Iran’s immediate concern in the current discussions is achieving a lasting end to the conflict. He explained that the focus of the talks remains on stabilising the situation rather than addressing technical matters related to Iran’s nuclear programme.
The spokesperson noted that issues such as uranium enrichment levels and the management of enriched uranium reserves are not presently being discussed in detail. He suggested that those topics may be considered at a later stage if broader negotiations move forward.
Strait of Hormuz Remains Sensitive Issue
Baghaei also addressed questions regarding the future operation of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime routes for energy transportation. He said that decisions concerning the management of the strategic waterway are matters that involve only Iran and Oman.
His remarks came amid growing international attention on shipping security in the region. The Strait of Hormuz plays a critical role in global trade, particularly in the transportation of oil and natural gas from the Gulf region to international markets.
Trump Outlines Conditions for Understanding
Earlier, President Trump shared his position through a social media statement, setting out several expectations for any future arrangement with Iran. Among them was a demand that Iran commit to never developing a nuclear weapon.
Trump also called for unrestricted maritime movement through the Strait of Hormuz. He stated that commercial vessels should be allowed to pass freely in both directions and added that any underwater explosive devices in the area should be removed. He further announced that the US naval blockade would be lifted.
In addition, Trump said that Iran’s stockpiles of enriched uranium would be located and eliminated through cooperation involving the United States, Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Compensation and Future Negotiations
The US president also addressed Iran’s request for financial compensation linked to the conflict. According to Trump, no payments would be made at this stage, indicating that the issue remains unresolved.
Despite the differences between the two sides, diplomatic engagement appears to be continuing. Observers say negotiations have involved multiple proposals aimed at establishing conditions for a long-term settlement.
Ceasefire Opened Door for Dialogue
Iran, the United States and Israel entered into a ceasefire agreement on April 8, bringing an end to 40 days of hostilities. Since then, efforts have reportedly intensified to transform the temporary halt in fighting into a broader political understanding.
Reports suggest that several draft proposals have been exchanged in recent weeks through mediation facilitated by Pakistan. Officials are believed to be working toward a memorandum of understanding that could provide a framework for future cooperation and help maintain stability in the region.
