Diplomacy – India reaffirmed its commitment to deepening relations with Venezuela as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met Venezuela’s Acting President Delcy Rodriguez in New Delhi on Thursday. The meeting highlighted the growing importance of bilateral cooperation and underscored both countries’ interest in expanding engagement across several strategic sectors.

Jaishankar Highlights Importance of Bilateral Relations
Following the meeting, Jaishankar shared details of the interaction on social media, describing the discussion as productive and expressing appreciation for Rodriguez’s continued support in strengthening ties between the two nations. He noted that her engagement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi would contribute further to advancing cooperation and mutual understanding between India and Venezuela.
The minister emphasized that both countries have maintained a positive relationship over the years and are working toward broadening collaboration in areas of common interest.
Five-Day Visit Focused on Expanding Cooperation
Rodriguez arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for a five-day official working visit aimed at reinforcing diplomatic and economic relations. The visit is expected to provide a platform for reviewing existing partnerships and identifying new opportunities for cooperation.
Welcoming the Venezuelan leader, India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that the visit would help strengthen bilateral engagement and build upon the progress already achieved through previous exchanges between the two countries.
Meetings Scheduled With Indian Leadership
As part of her official programme, Rodriguez is scheduled to hold discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other senior members of the Indian government. These meetings are expected to focus on a broad range of issues relevant to both countries.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit is taking place from June 3 to June 7 and includes several high-level interactions intended to deepen diplomatic and economic collaboration.
High-Level Delegation Accompanies Venezuelan Leader
The Acting President is accompanied by a senior delegation that includes ministers responsible for foreign affairs, economy and finance, science and technology, communication and information, as well as transportation. The presence of key cabinet members reflects the significance both sides attach to strengthening bilateral engagement.
Her official engagements began on June 4 with a meeting involving External Affairs Minister Jaishankar, followed by talks with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House in New Delhi.
Broad Agenda Covering Key Sectors
During the visit, both governments are expected to review the full spectrum of India-Venezuela relations. Discussions are likely to focus on enhancing cooperation in several important sectors, including energy security, trade, investment, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, transportation, and renewable energy.
Officials believe that closer collaboration in these areas could generate mutual benefits while contributing to long-term economic growth and development.
Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi Included in Itinerary
Apart from official meetings, Rodriguez is also scheduled to visit Rajghat, where she will pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi. The visit forms part of her broader diplomatic programme in India and reflects the ceremonial aspects often associated with high-level international visits.
Rodriguez was initially expected to travel to India for participation in the International Big Cat Alliance Summit on June 1. However, after the event was postponed, the visit was reorganized as a formal working trip focused on bilateral discussions.
The ongoing engagements are expected to further strengthen the partnership between India and Venezuela while opening new avenues for cooperation in sectors of strategic and economic importance.
