Premature greying is common in young men and women. It may affect one’s confidence and be humiliating. Because our hair follicles generate less melanin, the pigment that gives hair its color, grey hair often emerges as individuals age.

However, early greying—when hair begins to turn grey before the ages of 25 for women and 30 for men—may indicate oxidative stress or cellular damage in the body, according to Dr. Vivek Bande, a surgical oncologist at TGH Onco-Life Cancer Centre in Talegaon. An increased risk of cancer has also been linked to this similar mechanism.

Furthermore, oxidative stress occurs when dangerous chemicals known as free radicals accumulate and injure cells. This may contribute to the development of malignancies by influencing not only the color of hair but also DNA and tissues all throughout the body.

Premature graying hasn’t been linked to any cancer cases, but smoking, drinking, genetics, family history, obesity, and air pollution are the main causes of cancer. Although gray hair is not an indication of cancer, it may sometimes serve as an outward indicator of internal health issues.

Both graying and cell damage may be accelerated by lifestyle choices, including smoking, eating poorly, being around pollutants, and experiencing long-term stress. Not everyone with gray hair is at danger since genetics also plays a part.

If you are graying, don’t worry; simply see a professional. Premature graying may not always translate into malignancy. Cancer prevention and caution are essential. The body may use grey hair as a reminder to take better care of your internal and external health, rather than only as a cosmetic alteration. Therefore, it is best to get aid as soon as possible and not to believe any rumors.
