SEOKeyword – Director Indrajit Lankesh has looked back at a defining chapter of his filmmaking career, recalling how he introduced Deepika Padukone to the silver screen through the Kannada film Aishwarya. As he gears up for the release of his upcoming project, Jai Hind Jai Sindh, the filmmaker shared memories of discovering the future star and the qualities that convinced him she was destined for remarkable success.

A Chance Recommendation Led to a Career-Defining Casting
Speaking about the casting process, Lankesh revealed that he had been searching for a fresh face when Deepika Padukone’s name was suggested to him. Their first meeting was arranged by Pooja Dadlani, who was managing Deepika’s professional work at that time and is now widely known for handling Shah Rukh Khan’s business affairs.
According to the director, the decision to cast Deepika happened almost instantly. He recalled meeting her inside a lift, where he had just begun explaining the film’s story. Even before he could finish introducing the script, she had already shown complete confidence in taking up the role, making the selection process surprisingly effortless.
Confidence and Screen Presence Stood Out Immediately
Lankesh said that Deepika possessed a combination of qualities rarely seen in newcomers. Beyond her appearance and height, he was impressed by her confidence, natural screen presence, and determination to establish herself in the industry.
He explained that his responsibility as a director was to provide an environment where she could perform without hesitation. From the beginning, he believed she had the potential to build a successful career well beyond regional cinema.
Prediction About International Success Became Reality
Reflecting further, the filmmaker shared that he had once told Deepika she would eventually reach Hollywood. At the time, it was simply an instinct based on the confidence and ambition he observed in her.
Years later, when Deepika appeared alongside Vin Diesel in the Hollywood action film xXx: Return of Xander Cage, Lankesh said he remembered that earlier conversation and felt his prediction had come true.
Clarifying the Timeline of Her Early Career
The director also addressed a long-standing misconception regarding Deepika’s early film journey. He clarified that she was not simultaneously working on Om Shanti Om while shooting Aishwarya.
According to Lankesh, Shah Rukh Khan signed Deepika for Om Shanti Om only after Aishwarya completed a successful theatrical run of 100 days. He emphasized that her Kannada debut played a significant role in opening the doors to her Bollywood breakthrough.
Aishwarya Marked the Beginning of a Successful Journey
Released in 2006, Aishwarya was a Kannada romantic drama directed by Indrajit Lankesh. The film featured Upendra in the lead role, while Deepika Padukone made her acting debut opposite him. Actress Daisy Bopanna also played an important role in the film. The movie was an official remake of the Telugu hit Manmadhudu, released in 2002.
Looking back, Lankesh’s recollections highlight the early moments of a career that eventually transformed Deepika Padukone into one of India’s most recognized actors on both national and international platforms
