India-New Zealand FTA – Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to New Zealand has been described as an important development in the growing relationship between the two countries, with New Zealand Revenue Minister Simon Watts highlighting the newly signed India-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement as a major milestone.

Speaking in Auckland on Friday, Watts said the agreement could create fresh opportunities for businesses, investors and workers in both nations. He said the deal reflects a broader effort by India and New Zealand to deepen their economic engagement while supporting an open and rules-based international system.

Growing Economic Engagement

Watts said the Free Trade Agreement represents a meaningful step in the bilateral relationship and is expected to support stronger commercial links between the two economies. According to him, the agreement has the potential to widen access to markets and encourage cooperation across several sectors.

He noted that India and New Zealand share similar views on the importance of multilateral cooperation and international rules. The minister said the agreement was not only focused on trade but also reflected a wider commitment to stable and predictable global partnerships.

The signing comes at a time when both countries are looking to strengthen economic ties and explore new areas of collaboration. India’s expanding market and New Zealand’s strengths in agriculture, education, technology and services are expected to provide scope for deeper engagement.

Visit Seen as a Key Diplomatic Moment

Watts called Modi’s visit a significant occasion for New Zealand, saying the decision to host the Indian Prime Minister underlines the value Wellington places on its relationship with New Delhi.

He said the visit sends a clear message that both governments are interested in building a stronger and more sustained partnership. The Free Trade Agreement, he added, provides an important foundation for the next stage of cooperation between the two countries.

The minister also said the visit holds particular importance for the Indian community living in New Zealand. Indian-origin residents form a prominent part of the country’s social and economic landscape, and closer ties between the two nations are likely to be welcomed by the diaspora.

Strategic Importance of the Partnership

Referring to Modi’s role in global affairs, Watts said the Indian leader’s presence in New Zealand reflects the strategic importance of the relationship. He described Modi as an influential figure on the international stage and said New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon was pleased to host him.

Watts said Modi’s visit demonstrates India’s interest in expanding its engagement with New Zealand beyond traditional diplomatic exchanges. He added that the two governments are looking forward to developing a relationship that combines economic cooperation with shared positions on global governance and multilateral engagement.

New Zealand has increasingly focused on building stronger connections with major Indo-Pacific partners, and India is viewed as an important country in that approach. The agreement is expected to support more regular engagement between policymakers, businesses and institutions from both sides.

Focus on Future Cooperation

Watts thanked Prime Minister Modi for visiting New Zealand and said the trip had helped reinforce the momentum in bilateral relations. He said both governments now have an opportunity to build on the agreement and translate it into practical benefits for people and businesses.

With the Free Trade Agreement in place, India and New Zealand are expected to pursue closer cooperation in trade, investment, education, innovation and people-to-people exchanges. The visit has also strengthened expectations that the partnership will continue to expand in the coming years.
