Airport Security – German authorities launched a major investigation after an explosive-carrying drone was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport, prompting temporary runway closures and raising fresh concerns over aviation security.
Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport briefly suspended operations after officials discovered a drone carrying an explosive device near one of its runways, triggering an extensive security response and prompting renewed concerns over emerging threats to critical transport infrastructure. Authorities confirmed the device was safely neutralized, while investigators continue examining how the drone reached the airport and who may have been responsible.
Explosive Device Found Near South Runway
According to regional police and prosecutors, an airport employee spotted the drone close to the airport’s south runway. Officers responding to the scene found that the aircraft was carrying an unidentified explosive device. Bomb disposal specialists examined the object before safely removing its detonator, eliminating the immediate risk.
The discovery followed reports of an unidentified flying object near the airport shortly before midnight on Tuesday. As a precaution, airport officials shut both runways, and emergency teams deployed an explosives-disposal robot to inspect the suspicious object. Several flights were diverted during the operation, including at least one passenger aircraft.
Interior Minister Describes Emerging Threat
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt traveled to Leipzig/Halle Airport after cutting short his vacation to receive updates from investigators. Speaking at the airport, he described the incident as representing a dangerous shift in the nature of drone-related security risks.
Dobrindt said authorities had dealt with unauthorized drone sightings and potential hybrid threats before, but the discovery of a drone equipped with explosives at an active airport introduced an entirely new level of concern. He characterized the event as a hybrid attack scenario but declined to identify any suspected individuals or groups while the investigation remains underway.
The minister added that officials are working to determine the type of explosives involved, the origin of the drone, and how it entered the restricted airport area.
Aircraft Suffers Minor Damage During Diversion
Investigators also reported that a second unidentified flying object may have been involved during the incident. A freight aircraft attempting to land at Leipzig/Halle Airport abandoned its approach because of the runway closure and was redirected to Hannover Airport, approximately 200 kilometers away.
Authorities later found slight damage to the cargo aircraft after it landed safely in Hannover. Officials are examining whether the damage resulted from contact with another airborne object during the aborted landing. No injuries were reported.
Airport operations gradually resumed after the security operation concluded. The north runway reopened roughly two hours after the initial closure, while the south runway remained unavailable due to previously scheduled maintenance. Officials confirmed there was no ongoing risk to passengers or airport personnel, and daytime flight schedules continued without significant disruption.
Investigation Continues Amid Wider Security Concerns
Images from the airport showed bomb disposal teams working near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft parked at the facility. Leipzig/Halle Airport is one of Europe’s leading freight hubs and regularly handles heavy cargo operations, including aircraft operated by Ukrainian transport companies.
NATO acknowledged awareness of the incident but referred all questions to German authorities, who continue leading the investigation.
The discovery has drawn additional attention because Leipzig/Halle Airport has previously been linked to security incidents. In 2024, an incendiary device ignited inside a freight container at a logistics center located at the airport. Western security officials later said they believed that incident formed part of a sabotage operation suspected of having connections to Russian intelligence.
Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Western governments have repeatedly accused Moscow and affiliated groups of carrying out sabotage attempts, cyber activities, and other disruptive operations across Europe. German investigators have not publicly connected the latest airport incident to any foreign actor, emphasizing that inquiries remain active and no conclusions have yet been reached.
