Rice – Andhra Pradesh Rolls Out Subsidised Rice Sales Through Rythu Bazaars Across State
Rice –The Andhra Pradesh government has introduced a State-wide programme to make rice available at reduced prices, offering relief to families affected by increasing retail rates. The initiative began on Sunday with sales through 130 Rythu Bazaars and 500 dedicated counters operating at rice mills. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar formally launched the programme at the APIIC Rythu Bazaar in Vijayawada, where he also handed over rice to consumers.
Subsidised rice offered below prevailing market rates
As part of the new scheme, BPT Super Fine rice is being sold at Rs 52 per kilogram, while BPT Raw Rice is available at Rs 50 per kilogram. These prices are lower than those currently seen in the open market. To ensure wider access, each eligible consumer can purchase up to 10 kilograms after Aadhaar-based authentication.
Government cites rising prices as key reason
Speaking to reporters, Minister Nadendla Manohar said the government decided to step in after reviewing recent fluctuations in rice prices across the State. According to him, the administration assessed the impact of rising costs on households before introducing the subsidised sales programme.
The Minister also acknowledged the cooperation of the Andhra Pradesh Rice Millers Association, stating that discussions with the organisation played an important role in making the initiative possible. He said the support extended by rice millers helped the government implement the programme without delay.
Price difference expected to benefit consumers
Officials said BPT Super Fine rice, which is currently selling between Rs 62 and Rs 65 per kilogram in the retail market, will now be available for Rs 52 through the designated outlets. Another commonly purchased rice variety, usually priced between Rs 58 and Rs 60 per kilogram, is being supplied at Rs 50 under the scheme.
The government expects the reduced prices to provide meaningful savings for families, particularly those managing rising household expenses. By offering rice through authorised sales points, the administration aims to improve affordability while maintaining regular availability.
More essential commodities may be included
The Minister said the government is also examining the possibility of extending similar price support to other essential food items. He noted that discussions with the Central government are underway regarding the supply of red gram dal and palm oil at subsidised rates in the future.
If the proposal moves forward, the initiative could expand beyond rice and include additional commodities commonly used by households, helping consumers manage everyday expenses more effectively.
Public encouraged to utilise the programme
Nadendla Manohar appealed to residents to take advantage of the subsidised rice distribution, saying the coalition government remains focused on reducing the financial burden on families by ensuring access to essential commodities at reasonable prices.
The launch event was attended by Vijayawada East MLA Gadde Rammohan Rao, Civil Supplies Director Nupur, NTR District Collector Lakshmisha, and Andhra Pradesh Rice Millers Association President Gummadi Venkateswara Rao, along with other officials.
