Organ Transplant – Andhra Pradesh Plans Phased Expansion of Public Hospital Services
Organ Transplant – The Andhra Pradesh government is preparing a phased strategy to strengthen organ transplant facilities across government hospitals, aiming to make advanced treatment more accessible for patients who cannot afford expensive private medical care.
Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav has announced that the State government is developing a comprehensive action plan to transform 12 government hospitals into organ transplant centres over the coming years. The initiative is intended to improve the availability of transplant surgeries within the public healthcare system and reduce the financial burden on patients who currently rely on private hospitals for such specialised treatment.
Government Focuses on Strengthening Teaching Hospitals
The Minister shared the details while addressing a state-level organ donation awareness programme organised by Jeevandan at the AU Convention Centre in Visakhapatnam to mark National Organ Donation Day. He said the government is prioritising the development of transplant services in teaching hospitals so that economically weaker patients can receive quality treatment closer to home without facing high medical expenses.
According to the proposed roadmap, the first phase will focus on expanding kidney transplant services in teaching hospitals located in Visakhapatnam, Palasa, Kurnool, Vijayawada, Guntur, Tirupati, and Kakinada. Officials believe this expansion will significantly improve access to life-saving procedures in different regions of the State.
Future Plans Include Liver and Heart Transplants
Beyond kidney transplantation, the government is also preparing long-term plans to introduce liver transplant services by 2028. In addition, heart transplant facilities are expected to be established in government hospitals located in Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, and Kurnool by 2030. These measures are aimed at building a stronger public healthcare network capable of providing advanced transplant care across multiple specialties.
Demand for Organs Continues to Outpace Availability
The Minister highlighted the continuing shortage of donor organs despite the growing need for transplant procedures. He stated that government hospitals performed only 31 organ transplant surgeries during 2025, reflecting the limited availability of organs compared with the increasing number of patients awaiting treatment.
As of Sunday, official figures showed that 5,935 people in Andhra Pradesh were on the waiting list for different types of organ transplants. The government believes that increasing public awareness about organ donation will play a crucial role in narrowing the gap between demand and availability.
Proposal to Increase Support for Donor Families
During the programme, the Minister also revealed that the government is examining a proposal to increase financial assistance for the families of deceased organ donors. Under the proposal, the existing support amount of Rs 10,000 could be raised to Rs 1 lakh as a gesture of recognition for their contribution to saving lives.
The proposal was presented by representatives of the Savitribai Phule Educational and Charitable Trust and the All India Body and Organ Donors Association. They also requested livelihood assistance for donor families to provide long-term support after organ donation.
Additional Measures Under Consideration
Responding to the representation, the Minister assured that the government would review the demand for providing a contract or outsourced job to one eligible member from the family of every deceased organ donor. The representation further recommended introducing awareness programmes on organ and body donation in school and college curricula to encourage greater public participation in the future.
The State government believes that combining better medical infrastructure with stronger public awareness and enhanced support for donor families can help improve organ donation rates and expand access to life-saving transplant services across Andhra Pradesh.
