Holiday – Erode Declares August 3 Local Holiday to Honour Theeran Chinnamalai

Holiday – The Erode district administration has announced a local holiday on August 3 to mark the death anniversary of renowned freedom fighter Theeran Chinnamalai, with government offices and educational institutions observing the occasion.

The Erode district administration has officially declared August 3 as a local holiday to commemorate the death anniversary of Theeran Chinnamalai, one of Tamil Nadu’s respected freedom fighters. The announcement applies to government offices, schools, colleges and other educational institutions across the district. District Collector Kandasamy issued the order as part of the annual tribute paid to the leader, whose contribution to India’s resistance against British rule continues to be remembered across the Kongu region.

Schools and Government Offices to Remain Closed

Under the notification, all eligible government departments and educational institutions in Erode district will remain closed on August 3. However, the administration has clarified that any school or college examinations already scheduled for the day will take place without any changes. Students appearing for these examinations have been instructed to follow the existing timetable, as the holiday will not affect institutions where examination schedules had been announced earlier.

In addition to educational institutions, government offices covered under the local holiday order will also remain closed for the day. The observance is part of the state’s annual recognition of Theeran Chinnamalai’s contribution to the freedom movement and reflects the district’s continued respect for his legacy.

August 22 Declared as Compensatory Working Day

To make up for the holiday, the district administration has designated August 22 as a working day. Government offices, schools, colleges and other educational institutions that remain closed on August 3 will function normally on the compensatory date. Officials stated that this arrangement has been made to ensure that administrative work and academic activities are completed without affecting the annual schedule.

The revised calendar has been communicated to departments and institutions so that necessary preparations can be made well in advance.

Banks and Essential Treasury Services Unaffected

The Collector has clarified that the local holiday does not extend to banks because August 3 has not been declared a bank holiday under the applicable banking regulations. As a result, banking services across Erode district are expected to continue as usual.

The district treasury and subordinate treasury offices will also remain operational with limited staff to handle urgent financial and administrative transactions. This arrangement has been made to ensure that essential public services are available despite the local holiday.

Remembering Theeran Chinnamalai’s Contribution

Theeran Chinnamalai, whose birth name was Theerthagiri, is remembered as one of the prominent leaders who opposed the expansion of the British East India Company in the Kongu region during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. He organised armed resistance against British forces and became an important figure in the struggle for independence in southern India.

Historical records state that he was eventually captured by the British and executed at Sankagiri Fort on August 3, 1805. His sacrifice is commemorated every year, particularly in Erode and nearby districts, where government functions, memorial events and public programmes are organised to honour his role in the fight against colonial rule.
