Apartment Section Collapsed During the Night
The incident took place late on Thursday when a four-storey section of the B-Wing of Kohinoor Apartment collapsed in the Gangaramwadi area of Bhandari Compound in Bhiwandi, located in Thane district. According to local residents, a loud noise was heard at approximately 11.30 pm before a significant portion of the residential structure gave way.
Emergency services were alerted immediately as people gathered near the site in an attempt to help those trapped beneath the debris before rescue teams arrived. Authorities initially confirmed three deaths, but the number of fatalities later increased to nine as search efforts continued through the wreckage.
Rescue Teams Continue Search Efforts
A large-scale rescue operation was launched soon after the collapse. Personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Thane Disaster Response Force (TDRF), the Fire Brigade, local police, and officials from the Bhiwandi Nizampur City Municipal Corporation reached the location without delay.
Heavy equipment and trained rescue workers have been deployed to carefully remove debris while searching for anyone who may still be trapped. Medical teams also remain on standby to provide immediate assistance to survivors rescued from the site. Officials have stated that rescue operations will continue until every part of the collapsed structure has been thoroughly examined.
Maharashtra Government Orders Detailed Probe
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the collapse. He instructed officials to determine whether negligence or violations of building regulations contributed to the incident.
The Chief Minister has also ordered that a First Information Report (FIR) be registered against individuals or agencies found responsible after the inquiry is completed. The investigation will examine the structural condition of the building, maintenance records, and any possible lapses in safety compliance.
Focus on Building Safety
The collapse has once again raised concerns about the condition of ageing residential buildings in rapidly expanding urban areas. Experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of regular structural inspections, timely maintenance, and strict enforcement of construction standards to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
Authorities are expected to review the findings of the investigation before deciding on further administrative or legal action. Meanwhile, local officials continue to coordinate relief measures for affected families as rescue personnel remain engaged at the disaster site.
