Rescue teams recover third victim

The death toll in the Bhiwandi building collapse increased to three on Friday morning after emergency responders recovered another body from the rubble of a partially collapsed four-storey residential building. The incident occurred late on Thursday night, prompting a swift response from multiple rescue agencies.

Officials from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) confirmed that three bodies have been recovered so far. Search and rescue personnel remain at the site, carefully clearing debris in an effort to locate anyone who may still be trapped. The operation has continued through the night with heavy equipment and specialised rescue teams deployed to the affected area.

Cause of collapse yet to be determined

Authorities have not identified the reason behind the structural failure, and a detailed investigation is expected once rescue operations are completed. Engineers and civic officials are likely to examine the condition of the building to determine what led to the partial collapse.

Officials have also not confirmed how many residents or occupants were inside the building when the incident took place. As a result, rescue teams are proceeding cautiously to ensure no one remains buried under the debris. Local authorities have urged residents to stay away from the site while emergency work continues.

Emergency response remains underway

The collapse triggered a large-scale emergency response involving the NDRF and local administration. Rescue personnel have been using specialised equipment to remove concrete slabs and other debris while monitoring the stability of the remaining structure.

Officials said the priority remains the safe recovery of anyone who may still be inside the damaged building. Medical teams and local authorities have also been stationed near the site to assist with the ongoing operation.

Incident follows another fatal accident in Maharashtra

The Bhiwandi collapse comes only a few weeks after another deadly structural disaster in Maharashtra. On July 8, a massive heap of garbage collapsed onto a building at the Moshi garbage depot in Pimpri Chinchwad, resulting in the deaths of nine people.

That accident occurred during the afternoon when the waste mound suddenly gave way, trapping several people beneath the debris. A coordinated rescue effort involving the NDRF, the Indian Army, the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, the PMRDA Fire Department, police, and other agencies was launched to recover victims and search for survivors.

Civic authorities ordered inquiry after Moshi tragedy

Following the Moshi incident, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Vijay Suryavanshi instructed officials to complete a preliminary inquiry without delay. He also directed that a police case be registered against the contractor company associated with the site.

During a review meeting with senior civic officials, notices were ordered to be issued to the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s Environment Department as well as contractor Antony Lara Renewable. The administration said accountability would be established after examining the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Focus on structural safety

Reacting to the Moshi disaster, Union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale described the incident as deeply distressing and emphasised the importance of identifying and demolishing unsafe structures before they become a threat to public safety.

He stated that the government had announced financial assistance of Rs 25 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives in the accident. He also assured that appropriate preventive measures would be taken to reduce the risk of similar tragedies in the future.

As rescue operations continue in Bhiwandi, authorities are expected to provide further updates on casualties, the number of missing persons, and the findings of the investigation into the building collapse.
