Examination Reform –The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Monday expressed strong support for the Centre’s proposed anti-paper leak legislation, describing it as a significant step toward protecting the integrity of competitive examinations and ensuring justice for millions of students. Leaders from the BJP and its alliance partners said the proposed law would introduce stringent punishments for those involved in examination fraud and help restore confidence in the country’s recruitment and admission processes.
Government Stresses Need for Strict Legal Framework
Senior leaders from the ruling alliance said repeated incidents of question paper leaks have emerged as a major challenge across the country, affecting both state and central examinations. According to them, the proposed legislation is designed to deter organised criminal networks that profit from such illegal activities while safeguarding the interests of honest candidates.
Bihar Minister Dilip Jaiswal welcomed the move, stating that the government is determined to take decisive action against those responsible for examination malpractice. He said the proposed law includes provisions for imprisonment of up to 10 years along with financial penalties running into several crores of rupees, reflecting the government’s commitment to tackling the issue through strict legal measures.
Political Reactions Over the Proposed Bill
Jaiswal also criticised opposition parties, alleging that they were attempting to derive political advantage from the issue instead of supporting efforts to eliminate examination fraud. He claimed that the government’s intention is focused on protecting students and strengthening the credibility of the examination system.
West Bengal BJP leader Dilip Ghosh echoed similar views, recalling that the government had earlier announced its intention to introduce such legislation in Parliament. He said the Bill is now moving toward introduction, marking an important step in addressing a problem that has repeatedly affected students across the country.
Leaders Call Paper Leaks a National Concern
Ghosh described paper leaks as a serious issue that extends beyond individual states and impacts examinations conducted at both state and national levels. He said the recurring incidents not only jeopardise the future of deserving students but also enable illegal financial gains through organised fraud. According to him, the proposed law is intended to establish a long-term solution by imposing strict legal consequences on offenders.
JD(U) National Spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad also welcomed the Union Cabinet’s approval of the draft legislation. He said the decision sends a strong warning to those involved in examination-related crimes. Prasad noted that individuals found guilty under the proposed law could face imprisonment for up to 10 years along with fines that may extend to ₹10 crore.
Focus on Protecting Students and Breaking Fraud Networks
BJP Member of Parliament Medha Kulkarni described the proposed legislation as an important reform in the country’s examination system. She said the measures are intended to ensure that future examinations remain transparent and that students are not forced to suffer because of organised cheating and paper leak incidents.
Kulkarni added that the Bill specifically targets criminal networks involved in examination fraud rather than isolated incidents. She said the stringent provisions are aimed at improving accountability while discouraging individuals and groups from engaging in activities that undermine the fairness of public examinations.
Centre Seeks Stronger Protection for Examination System
The proposed legislation is expected to establish a more robust legal framework for dealing with examination-related offences across the country. By introducing stricter punishments, enhanced accountability, and faster legal action against those responsible for paper leaks, the Centre aims to strengthen public trust in recruitment and entrance examinations while ensuring equal opportunities for deserving candidates.
