NEET Paper Leak – Kolkata Police File Six Cases After Protest Violence and Media Attacks
NEET Paper Leak – Kolkata Police have launched multiple investigations after violence erupted during a protest against the alleged NEET examination paper leak, leading to clashes, damage, and injuries to police personnel as well as journalists.
Authorities in Kolkata have registered six First Information Reports (FIRs) following violence that broke out during a joint demonstration organised by the youth and student wings of various Left parties, along with the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The protest, held on Friday over the alleged NEET paper leak, turned chaotic after groups of unruly individuals allegedly disrupted the gathering. Police officials said initial findings indicate that several people with criminal backgrounds had mixed with the protesters and played a major role in triggering the disturbances.
Police Begin Multiple Investigations
According to officials, one FIR was filed by the police on their own at Hare Street Police Station under Kolkata’s Central Division. The remaining five cases were registered after separate complaints were submitted regarding alleged assaults on media personnel covering the demonstration. Several reporters and photojournalists reportedly suffered injuries during the unrest.
Investigators stated that officers are reviewing extensive video recordings collected from the protest site. These recordings are being examined to identify those responsible for acts of violence and property damage. Police believe the footage has already helped identify a number of suspected troublemakers who allegedly joined the protest with the intention of creating disorder.
Protest Escalates Into Violent Confrontation
The demonstration was originally organised by student and youth organisations linked to different Left parties. Later, members of the Cockroach Janta Party joined the protest after police reportedly declined permission for the party to hold a separate rally on the same issue.
What began as a protest in Kolkata’s Esplanade area soon escalated into a major confrontation. Authorities said that a section of the crowd allegedly threw bricks, stones, glass bottles, bamboo sticks and other objects at police personnel. Media teams covering the protest also came under attack during the violence.
To regain control of the situation, police used batons and fired tear gas shells to disperse the crowd. The clashes resulted in injuries to several journalists, while law enforcement personnel also faced attacks during the operation.
Chief Minister Condemns Violence
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari strongly criticised the incidents and assured that those responsible would face legal consequences. Following the clashes, security agencies remained on alert while investigations continued.
The Chief Minister also visited SSKM Hospital, where injured journalists were receiving treatment. During the visit, he met the victims, reviewed their medical condition and directed officials to ensure they received appropriate healthcare.
Government Promises Strict Legal Action
In a public statement shared through social media, the Chief Minister condemned the attacks on both journalists and police personnel. He said that strict legal proceedings would be initiated against everyone found responsible for the violence. He also instructed the Kolkata Police Commissioner to identify the individuals involved and proceed with action under the law.
Police officials have reiterated that the investigation remains active and additional evidence is being analysed. Authorities said every person identified through video footage or other evidence would be dealt with according to legal procedures. The investigations are expected to continue as officers examine complaints, collect witness statements and verify all available evidence related to the violence that disrupted the protest.
