Judiciary – Lok Sabha Set to Debate Supreme Court Judges Amendment Bill Today
Judiciary –The Lok Sabha is expected to witness an important legislative discussion today as the government places the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026, before the House for consideration and approval.
The proposed legislation will be introduced by Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal. The Bill aims to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, with the objective of revising provisions related to the sanctioned strength of judges in the country’s highest court. The government is expected to seek the passage of the Bill during the day’s proceedings after members debate its provisions.
Opposition Resolution to Be Discussed Alongside Bill
The proposed law will be considered together with a statutory resolution submitted by opposition MPs Sougata Ray, N.K. Premachandran, and Adv. Dean Kuriakose. Through the resolution, the opposition has sought to register the House’s disapproval of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance that was issued by the President on May 16, 2026.
According to the revised agenda of the Lok Sabha, both the resolution and the Amendment Bill have been listed for discussion during the same sitting, allowing members from both sides to present their views before the House reaches a decision.
Public Accounts Committee to Present Key Defence Reports
Apart from legislative business, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) is scheduled to submit several reports covering important defence-related matters. Committee members K.C. Venugopal and Dharmendra Yadav will present the panel’s 48th report, which examines delays in the production of the electronically upgraded 155mm/45 calibre DHANUSH artillery gun system.
The committee is also expected to place additional reports highlighting the implementation of defence offset policies and financial losses linked to defective ammunition supplied to the Indian Army by the Ordnance Factory at Badmal. According to the report, the replacement of faulty ammunition resulted in losses exceeding ₹62 crore.
Another report will draw attention to delays in submitting Action Taken Notes on audit observations, raising concerns about compliance with parliamentary accountability mechanisms.
Finance and Consumer Affairs Panels to Table Reports
The Standing Committee on Finance will also present its 36th report concerning the Securities Markets Code, 2025. The report is expected to be tabled by committee representatives Bhartruhari Mahtab and Jayanta Kumar Roy as part of the day’s parliamentary schedule.
Meanwhile, the Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution is expected to submit reports dealing with consumer protection and food regulation. Among the issues covered are the regulation of packaged commodities, the sugar content in products intended for infants, and efforts to modernise the Public Distribution System by strengthening its technology-driven database infrastructure.
Routine Parliamentary Business to Continue
Following the presentation of committee reports, the Lok Sabha will proceed with its scheduled Question Hour, providing members an opportunity to seek responses from the government on matters of public importance. Proceedings under Rule 377, which allows MPs to raise issues requiring government attention, will also be taken up later in the day.
Union Minister Ajay Tamta is scheduled to table official documents related to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. In addition, the Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha will inform members about a message received from the Rajya Sabha concerning the Joint Committee examining the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, along with the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
The day’s business is also expected to include a motion by Deputy Leader of the Opposition Gaurav Gogoi regarding the 17th Report of the Business Advisory Committee, bringing another parliamentary matter before the House as lawmakers continue with an agenda covering legislative, financial and administrative issues.
