Drainage – DDA Removes Massive Silt Build-Up to Improve Rohini Drainage System

Drainage – Urban drainage infrastructure upgrade for monsoon preparedness – The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has carried out a large-scale desilting operation on one of Rohini’s key underground trunk outfall drains to improve water flow ahead of the monsoon season. Acting under the directions of Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, the authority removed more than 10,000 metric tonnes of accumulated silt and waste from the drainage network in an effort to restore its original capacity and reduce the chances of flooding in nearby residential areas.

Large Underground Drain Faced Years of Heavy Silt Accumulation

Officials said the underground drain had gradually lost much of its carrying capacity after years of continuous wastewater movement and the steady build-up of silt. The blockage affected the efficiency of the drainage system, increasing concerns over waterlogging during periods of intense rainfall. Since the pipelines are located underground and have a large diameter, conventional cleaning techniques were unable to effectively remove the compacted deposits.

The trunk outfall drain serves as one of the most important drainage channels in the Rohini region, making its maintenance essential for uninterrupted stormwater movement. Authorities noted that restoring the system before the peak monsoon period has been a priority to improve the area’s overall drainage performance.

Advanced Equipment Used for Complex Cleaning Operation

To address the challenge, the DDA deployed specialised high-capacity super sucker machines along with advanced jetting equipment. Engineers first used high-pressure water jets to loosen hardened layers of silt inside the pipelines. The loosened material was then extracted using powerful vacuum suction systems designed for large underground drainage infrastructure.

Officials explained that the work required careful planning because of the confined environment inside the underground pipelines. The desilting exercise was completed in phases, with teams following established safety procedures throughout the operation to ensure the protection of workers and equipment.

Drain Plays Key Role in Rohini’s Stormwater Network

The underground trunk outfall drain was constructed between 1995 and 1998 and consists of multiple reinforced cement concrete (RCC) pipelines measuring 2,200 millimetres in diameter. Depending on the section, the network includes three, four and five parallel pipelines that together form a major drainage corridor for the region.

The drainage system carries stormwater and discharge from Rohini Sectors 20, 21, 22 and 23, while also serving parts of Kirari and Begumpur. Because of its strategic role, any reduction in its carrying capacity can directly affect the movement of rainwater across several residential neighbourhoods during heavy showers.

Project Aims to Reduce Waterlogging During Monsoon

According to the DDA, the desilting campaign is expected to restore the drain’s original efficiency, allowing stormwater to move more freely through the network. Officials believe the improved flow will help minimise waterlogging and support quicker drainage during periods of intense rainfall.

The authority added that strengthening drainage infrastructure remains an important part of its seasonal preparedness strategy. Timely maintenance of critical drains is expected to improve urban resilience and reduce disruptions caused by heavy rain across Rohini and adjoining localities.

Desilting Drive Nears Completion Across Remaining Zones

The DDA said similar desilting work has already been completed in the East, South and North Zones of Delhi. Operations in Narela, Rohini and Dwarka have entered the final phase and are expected to conclude soon.

The authority stated that the citywide initiative has been implemented in mission mode with continuous field inspections and regular monitoring of progress. Officials said the objective is to ensure that major drainage systems remain functional before the monsoon reaches its peak, helping improve water management across the capital.
