Rainfall – Heavy Showers Forecast Across South Bengal During Rath Yatra
Rainfall –The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a spell of moderate to heavy rainfall across Kolkata and several districts of south Bengal over the next four days, raising concerns about weather-related disruptions during the Jagannath Rath Yatra scheduled for Thursday. The forecast also includes thunderstorms and gusty winds in many parts of the region.
Rain Likely to Continue Across South Bengal
Officials at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore said weather conditions are expected to remain active across south Bengal until the weekend. Kolkata, along with several neighbouring districts, is likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall during this period. According to the latest forecast, the prevailing weather pattern may begin to change in the southern districts from Sunday, bringing some improvement after several days of unsettled conditions.
Thunderstorms and Strong Winds Under Yellow Alert
The Met Department has issued a yellow alert for all districts of south Bengal, including Kolkata, warning residents about thunderstorms accompanied by rain over the coming days. In isolated areas, wind speeds may reach between 30 and 40 kmph, increasing the possibility of temporary disruptions, especially in low-lying locations and during outdoor activities.
On Wednesday, heavy rainfall is expected in North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore and Jhargram districts. The remaining districts are likely to receive moderate rainfall, while thunderstorms may continue throughout the day.
Rath Yatra Celebrations May Face Weather Challenges
The IMD has indicated that Thursday’s Jagannath Rath Yatra could be affected by widespread rainfall across several districts. Heavy showers are expected in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, Jhargram, Purulia, Bankura and West Burdwan.
An orange alert has been issued for South 24 Parganas and East Midnapore because of the possibility of more intense rainfall. Other districts are also likely to experience thunderstorms and intermittent rain. Weather officials believe similar conditions may continue through Friday and Saturday, creating operational challenges for Rath Yatra organisers, devotees and local authorities responsible for managing public gatherings.
North Bengal Also Expected to Receive Heavy Rain
Rain activity is not expected to remain confined to south Bengal. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri on Wednesday, while a yellow alert has been issued for the remaining districts of north Bengal. Weather conditions are expected to remain largely unchanged on Thursday and Friday, with continued chances of showers across the region.
From Sunday onward, rainfall is likely to become more widespread again, particularly across the northern districts. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Cooch Behar and Alipurduar are expected to receive heavy rainfall, with the intensity likely to increase further on Monday as the weather system strengthens.
Authorities Advise Residents to Stay Updated
With multiple weather alerts in place, residents have been advised to monitor official forecasts and take necessary precautions while travelling or participating in outdoor events. Organisers of the Jagannath Rath Yatra are also expected to remain prepared for changing weather conditions, as persistent rainfall and strong winds could affect arrangements in several districts over the coming days.
