Weather – Heavy Monsoon Rainfall Likely Across North, Central and Eastern India Today
Weather – Monsoon forecast across India with heavy rain alerts and thunderstorm warnings – India is expected to witness another spell of active monsoon weather as widespread rainfall is forecast across several northern, central, eastern and northeastern states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that many regions could receive heavy to very heavy showers on Saturday, while thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds are also expected in several areas, including Delhi-NCR.

The weather agency said that although the low-pressure system currently positioned over northern parts of central Uttar Pradesh is likely to weaken during the next 24 hours, the broader monsoon circulation remains favourable for continued rainfall across large parts of the country. Existing atmospheric conditions are expected to support persistent rain over north, central, east and northeast India in the coming days.
Multiple Weather Systems Driving Rainfall
According to the IMD, several weather systems are working together to strengthen monsoon activity. These include a low-pressure area over central Uttar Pradesh, the monsoon trough extending close to its normal position in the west while shifting slightly northward in the east, and an upper-air cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and neighbouring Bangladesh. In addition, cyclonic circulations over western and northeastern Assam, along with an active western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Punjab, are contributing to widespread rainfall.
Rain Alert for Northern States
Heavy rainfall has been predicted at isolated locations across Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on July 11. Similar weather conditions are expected over Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and western Uttar Pradesh. Residents have been advised to remain alert as intense rainfall may affect normal daily activities.
Uttar Pradesh and Central India to Receive Continued Showers
Rainfall is likely to continue across Uttar Pradesh over the next several days. Western parts of the state are expected to receive isolated heavy showers on Saturday, while eastern Uttar Pradesh could experience more widespread rainfall. The possibility of heavy rain is expected to increase further from July 12.
Across central India, the active monsoon is expected to keep weather conditions unsettled. Parts of East and West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are likely to witness scattered rainfall. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and wind speeds of 40 to 50 kmph, with occasional gusts reaching up to 60 kmph, have been forecast for eastern Madhya Pradesh. Western Madhya Pradesh may also experience strong surface winds reaching nearly 50 kmph.
Northeast and Southern States Remain Under Active Monsoon
The northeastern region is also expected to remain under the influence of widespread monsoon rainfall. Arunachal Pradesh may receive isolated heavy showers, while Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura are likely to witness frequent rain along with thunderstorms and lightning.
In southern India, monsoon activity is expected to stay active over Coastal Karnataka, where heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places. Kerala and Mahe are also expected to receive moderate to heavy showers. Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal could witness thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds. Similar weather conditions are forecast across Telangana, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and interior Karnataka.
Delhi Records Cleanest Air Day of the Year
Continuous rainfall has also contributed to improved air quality in parts of northern India. On July 9, Delhi recorded a daily average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 48, placing the city in the “Good” category for the first time in 2026, according to the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM). It marked the cleanest air recorded in the national capital this year and the first “Good” AQI day since September 10, 2023.
Public Advised to Stay Alert
The IMD has urged people living in rain-affected regions to remain cautious, as heavy showers may result in waterlogging, traffic congestion, reduced visibility and localized flooding in low-lying areas. Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall, and follow safety precautions during thunderstorms.
